A.A. Rano Launches Nigeria’s First Fully Automated, Unmanned Fuel Stations

Nigeria’s downstream oil and gas sector is set for a major technological shift as A.A. Rano Nigeria Limited, founded by renowned oil magnate Alhaji Auwalu Abdullahi Rano, has announced the launch of the country’s first fully automated and unmanned fuel stations.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the company disclosed that the new stations will operate 24 hours a day, offering customers a seamless self-service experience powered by advanced digital technology. Akahi News gathered that the initiative marks a significant departure from Nigeria’s traditional fuel retail model, which has largely relied on manual operations and attendants.

According to the statement, the automated fuel stations are being rolled out in partnership with Petrosoft Limited, a Nigerian technology company known for developing management systems for the oil and gas industry.

Under the agreement, Petrosoft will deploy its SmartPump and automated station technology across A.A. Rano’s network of more than 200 retail outlets nationwide. Akahi News learnt that this large-scale deployment positions the project as one of the most ambitious digital transformations in Nigeria’s fuel retail space to date.

The first set of automated stations is expected to commence operations within January 2026, allowing customers to refuel independently, make contactless digital payments, and complete transactions without the presence of fuel attendants.

How the Automated Stations Will Work

A.A. Rano explained that the new system is designed to provide transparency, efficiency, and convenience for motorists. With SmartPump technology in place, customers will be able to pay digitally before dispensing fuel, ensuring they receive the exact volume paid for.

The company noted that automation will significantly reduce operational losses, curb sharp practices, and rebuild consumer confidence in fuel dispensing accuracy. Akahi News gathered that concerns over under-dispensing have long been a source of tension between fuel marketers and consumers across the country.

Petrosoft Highlights Power of Homegrown Technology

Speaking on the development, Petrosoft’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Joshua Denila, described the project as proof that locally developed technology can address long-standing challenges in Nigeria’s energy sector.

“Our systems are developed locally and built to international standards,” Denila said. “They are designed to improve efficiency from single stations to large fuelling depots.”

He added that the collaboration with A.A. Rano demonstrates how Nigerian companies can deliver scalable, world-class solutions that meet global benchmarks while addressing local realities. Akahi News learnt that Petrosoft’s technology has been designed to integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure, making nationwide adoption easier.

Implications for Nigeria’s Fuel Retail Market

Industry observers say the introduction of unmanned, automated fuel stations could reshape consumer expectations and competitive dynamics in the downstream sector. With 24/7 availability, reduced human error, and transparent transactions, the model may appeal strongly to urban motorists and commercial operators.

However, the development also raises broader conversations around workforce adaptation and the future of jobs in fuel retailing. Akahi News gathered that stakeholders will be watching closely to see how operators balance technological efficiency with social considerations as automation expands.

A New Chapter for Fuel Retailing

For A.A. Rano Nigeria Limited, the initiative signals an ambition to lead innovation in an increasingly liberalised and competitive fuel market. The company said the automated stations align with its long-term vision of efficiency, customer trust, and modern retail standards.

As the first stations prepare to go live later this month, Nigerians will soon experience a fuel retail model that has, until now, largely been seen only in more technologically advanced markets. Akahi News will continue to monitor developments as the rollout progresses across the country.
