ADO-EKITI – No fewer than 300 youths will benefit in the empowerment programme organised by wives of top military and police officers in Ekiti State.
The youth/women empowerment programme was a midwife of Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) with the theme: ‘ Be The Change’,
The organisers disclosed that the programme would expose the beneficiaries to training in Makeup and Gele Tying, Barbing, Tie and Dying, Bag Making, Grinding Machine Operation, Beads Stringing and Tile Installation.
Declaring the training open in Ode Ekiti, headquarters of Gbonyin Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday, the Wife of the Chief of Defence Staff, Dr Omobolanle Olonisakin, said DEPOWA, as a non-governmental organisation is determined to partner government in tackling the menace of unemployment.
Olonisakin said the job of making the country safe and secured for all and sundry should not be left to the government alone, saying the time has come for all youths and women to be given the necessary supports by well-meaning Nigerians to make them economically independent and contribute to national development.
She added that the training, which will last for three weeks before empowerment in Ode Ekiti, is one out of many of such training organized by the DEPOWA, intending to build more entrepreneurs and reduce poverty in the society.
Olonisakin stated that the effort was part of the social responsibilities of the association to assist the less privileged and cushion the effect of the harsh economic situation in the country.
“The participants would be presented with tools and grants needed to start-up businesses of their own after training.
“Skill acquisition is now the order of the day because white-collar jobs are not available. I urge the participants to give their full attention to the training and be ready to put the knowledge gained into practice to be self-reliant,” she said.
Some of the participants expressed happiness for the opportunity and appreciated members of DEPOWA and its leadership for the gesture.
