BIU Turns Out 741 Graduates With 43 First Class Degree

BENIN – No fewer than 741 students will be graduating from Benson Idahosa University (BIU), Benin City, on Saturday with 43 of them receiving first class degrees (honours).

Prof. Sam Guobadia, Vice Chancellor of the university who announced this at a pre-convocation press briefing, said  593 of this number were with baccalaureate degrees while 148 with post graduates degrees for the 15th convocation.

According to the vice chancellor, this further broken down into 43 first Class (Hons), 190 Second Class Upper Division, 330 Second Class Lower Division and 30 third class.   

For the postgraduate degrees, he said, the institution would be graduating three PhDs, 94 MScs and 51PGDs

He also disclosed that the University will be playing host to Bishop Basil C. Edohansim, the Bishop of Aba Bishopric, CGMI on Friday, September 13, 2019 for the convocation service, while Prof. Julius A. Okojie has been chosen to deliver the convocation lecture titled, “The Nigeria university system in contempt of established academic  traditions: implication for quality assurance”, on Friday.

Prof. Guobadia, however, said that BIU will mint her first sets of Emeritus Professors in the persons of Prof. Philip A. Igbafe -Professor of History and Prof. Abhulimen R. Anao, Professor of Accounting.

“As part of activities for the ceremony, an honorary doctorate degree in Business Administration (honoris causa) will be awarded to Rt. Rev. Matthew Okpebholo, JP, for his business prowess and contribution to humanity,” he said.

Speaking on the university’s programmes, the VC said the programmes run by the university are accredited primarily by the National University Commission (NUC) and other regulatory bodies like the Council of Legal Education (CLE), Council of the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIBN), etc.

He appreciated the chancellor of the institution, Archbishop (Dr) Margaret Benson-Idahosa, JP, OON for her immense support for the goals and realization of the vision of the founding Chancellor/President, Archbishop Benson Idahosa of blessed memory.
