Burna Boy Faces Legal Battle Over Early Catalogue Sale

Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy is at the centre of a fresh legal storm, as a key shareholder in his former record label seeks to annul a multi-million dollar catalogue deal, raising questions about governance and artist rights in Nigeria’s music industry.

Akahi News gathered that 960 Music Group, which reportedly owns about 40 percent of Aristokrat Music, has filed a lawsuit seeking to invalidate the alleged sale of Burna Boy’s early music catalogue. The company claims the transaction, which took place in 2024, was executed without its knowledge or consent.

According to reports monitored by Akahi News, Aristokrat Music — the label instrumental in launching Burna Boy’s career — allegedly transferred ownership of the singer’s early recordings and intellectual property to Spaceship Music, the imprint associated with Burna Boy and his mother, Bose Ogulu.

960 Music contends that the assets in question are the label’s “crown jewel” and that the deal violated corporate governance protocols, including a lack of board authorisation and shareholder approval. In court documents, the company emphasised that the transaction effectively sidelined minority shareholders.

Escalation to Criminal Investigation

The matter has reportedly moved beyond civil litigation. The Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) has filed charges against Aristokrat Music founder, Piriye Isokrari, over alleged financial misconduct linked to the catalogue transfer.

Akahi News learnt that Isokrari faces accusations of fraudulent conversion and breach of fiduciary duty, with claims that proceeds from the sale may have been diverted or handled outside established company structures. Observers note that the outcome of these criminal proceedings could influence the civil case and the future control of Burna Boy’s early recordings.

Implications for Artist Rights and Label Governance

Industry experts emphasise that disputes like this highlight ongoing tensions between artists seeking to reclaim ownership of their early masters and the governance structures of record labels. Legal challenges over the transfer of intellectual property often delay or even reverse such reclamation efforts.

Should the court rule in favour of 960 Music, ownership of some of Burna Boy’s breakout-era hits could revert to the original partnership structure, pending further judicial decisions. Analysts believe the case could set a significant precedent for other artists seeking to regain control of their early works in Nigeria and across Africa.

Observers told Akahi News that beyond Burna Boy, the lawsuit shines a light on corporate governance practices in Nigerian record labels, shareholder rights, and the need for transparent transactions in the entertainment sector.

Akahi News gathered that music industry stakeholders are closely watching the proceedings, as the case may redefine how contracts, catalogues, and intellectual property are managed, particularly in multi-party label arrangements.

For Burna Boy, whose early tracks contributed to his rise as a global Afrobeats phenomenon, the court ruling could determine not just ownership but also revenue streams and legacy control over his foundational works.

Akahi News will continue monitoring developments, providing updates on both the civil suit and the related criminal investigations as they unfold.
