Commission seals defective building

By Tokunbo Ogunsami

Lagos State Safety Commission at the weekend sealed off a building under construction at Nnamdi Azikiwe Street, Lagos Island.

LSSC Director-General Lanre Mojola said that the building was sealed off because it was observed that the rules on construction safety were violated.

He added: “To prevent an untoward occurrence, the building was sealed off immediately. The commission will investigate activities on the site.

“In recent time, there have been series of collapsed buildings across the state due to illegal development and use of substandard materials by developers.

“The government will not spare owners of structures that do not comply with the laws on construction. We all can see that this building has many defects.

“Any worker found working on a building sealed off by this agency will be prosecuted.”

Mojola, who spoke during a sensitisation rally on Lagos Island with the theme: “Keep Safe, Stay Alive”, declared zero tolerance for safety infractions.

The commission educated traders, commuters and residents at Tafawa Balewa Square, CMS, Tinubu Square, Nnamdi Azikiwe Street, Oluwole Street and Tom-Jones Street during the exercise conducted in English language, Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo.

Mojola, who led the campaign, stressed the need to avoid practices that could compromise safety at homes and markets.

He said that carelessness and storage of inflammable items were one of the causes of fire outbreaks, which had led to loss of lives and properties.

The director-general said safety measures should be put in place at markets and homes, adding that fire extinguishers should be provided.

He urged the public, especially developers, to support the commission in achieving the policy thrust of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration.

Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs Dr. Wale Ahmed, who also joined the campaign, urged residents to report unsafe activities to the authorities.

The campaign team also included Commissioner for Home Affairs Anofiu Elegushi, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Central Business District Sola Giwa, top government officials and award-winning hip-hop artiste Patoranking.
