Professor Osinbajo who revealed that he took part in the ‘game’ said, “I also tried to take part in the game, but I will not tell you how many I got right but one thing that is very clear is that we have some very very smart people in this state, young men and women who are here.”
Winners were selected on the basis of the first participant to get a question right in each of the categories which saw the participants attempting questions on mathematics, English language and current affairs.
The Vice President, while addressing the participants said the federal government will partner with Ogun State government towards creating a lot of opportunities to positively engage the youths especially in the agro-allied industry since not everybody can get jobs in the civil and public services.
He said, “I want to say that one of the several commitments of the Federal Government as well as state governments, as you have seen today, is in ensuring that somehow we are able to engage some hundreds of thousands of young people who want jobs.
“When we opened the portal for the N Power, we had 12 million people but we were able to employ just only 500,000 but we are going to do additional number so that in the end we will employ at least a million to start with and as we go on, we are going to engage more.
“When you look at what people expect with the kind of profile the people have, you found out that there are so many people who are extremely competent. I was speaking earlier to the Governor and he was speaking about plans for creating an agro-allied industry here.
“Some people think farming is not that cool, but what we are doing today with the agro-allied farming setups, we make you realise that being a farmer and agro-allied industrialists in Nigeria is a very big deal because we can make a lot of money from it as well.
“I will be working with the Governor to see how we can do more empowerment, give more opportunities to young men and women in the State. At the end of the day, the most important thing is that most of us will not have government jobs but the best-paying jobs will still
be available in technology, agriculture, manufacturing, it is a whole
range of jobs that will be available.”
Governor Abiodun, while launching the job portal, jobs.ogunstate.gov.ng, said, “We are providing a database to allocate our people to the appropriate sectors where they will be most productive for themselves and the State.
“More significantly and it is my belief that the interface with active industry players would positively shape economic growth by enhancing the capacity of small and growing business owners.”
“Let me state that this job portal will register, on a continuous basis, employed and unemployed youths in the State with a view to providing them jobs and training opportunities suitable for their trade and academic qualifications.
“This Portal will, therefore, provide a platform for readily available and updated information of our graduates and those with vocational skills across the State with the aim of matching them with potential employers, training opportunities, not only within the Public Service
but also with the Private Sector, as our partners.
“In addition, towards ensuring that the citizens and residents of the State are not short-changed, we are preparing a Local Content Bill which will be sent to Ogun State House of Assembly. When this Bill is passed into law, it will make investors to first look inward to
availability of workers in Ogun State and make our youths their primary catchment area when they site their companies in Ogun State.”
