African Union Development Agency and the New Partnership for Africa Development (AUDA-NEPAD) National Coordinator, Princess Gloria Akobundu, has suggested ways to overcome unemployment.
She said the promotion of entrepreneurship, through capacity building initiatives for the unemployed, was a veritable tool against unemployment and poverty.
She spoke in Abuja at a capacity building workshop held by her organisation for youths and representatives of women co-operatives groups.
“You will all agree with me that addressing unemployment in Nigeria is of paramount importance to this present Administration.
“This workshop is therefore very crucial because it will provide us with the necessary information and knowledge needed for future business activities.
“It is from the foregoing that AUDA-NEPAD Nigeria is organising this capacity building workshop which is designed to facilitate wealth-creation that would alleviate poverty among women and create jobs to curb youth restiveness.
“It was meant to improve the knowledge and skills of these individuals with a view to preparing them to establish small businesses for sustenance.
“The over-arching objective of the workshop is to empower the youths and representative of women cooperatives to create job opportunities for the youths and women, and to acquire skills that will give rise to the emergence of a new generation of entrepreneurs.”
AUDA-NEPAD’s Director, Programmes Development and Implementation, A. M. Zacchaeus, said his organisation was organising similar poverty alleviation programmes for other segments of the society.
“It may interest you to know that AUDA-NEPAD is irrevocably committed to poverty reduction. And as we all know, the need to reduce poverty in Nigeria is of paramount importance to the present Administration.
“This capacity building workshop has, therefore, been tailored towards facilitating wealth creation that would alleviate the rate of poverty among youths and the women segments of our society,” he said.
At a capacity building workshop held earlier for staff, Akobundu urged the organisation’s personnel to be more committed to service.
She noted that staff members’ commitment was central to the realisation of the organisation’s key objective of aiding development in the continent.
Represented by the Director Administration and Finance (DAF), Jubril Muhammed, Akobundu, who is also the agency’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) was optimistic that the training “will greatly enhance staff’s efficiency and increase productivity.
Akobundu said the focus of the training, during which participants were taken through “public service rules, guidelines on appointment, promotion and discipline, and financial regulation for the staff of the administrative department,” was intended to aid the staff in their contributions to the realisation of the organisation’s goals and objectives.
An ex-official in the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Victor Onukogu, who was one of the resource persons, urged Administrative officers to be familiar with relevant financial regulations to enable them to utilise the government’s funds judiciously.
Onukogu, who is the author of the book: Essentials of promotion interviews on public service accounting, public service rules and current affairs, reminded participants that by virtue of their position some level of financial authority has been vested on them.
He described financial authority as the legal instruments that empower and guides all public officers in carrying out the government’s financial transactions, which include custody and accounting for the government’s revenue and disbursement of funds.
Head of Media, AUDA-NEPAD, Iyabo Akinwale said in a statement that participanexpressed delight at the training.
“They are now better prepared for the task ahead,” the statement said.
