Imo West Senate: PDP, Stakeholders Reject Tribunal Verdict

OWERRI – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo West has rejected the ruling of the Election Petition Tribunal on the March 9, 2019 senatorial election in the area, describing it as unacceptable, miscarriage of justice and a rape on democracy.

The tribunal had in its sitting held in Abuja on Monday, sustained the declaration of the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Rochas Okorocha, as the winner of the poll.

Speaking to newsmen in Owerri, the Imo West zonal PDP chairman, Chief Alloy Igwe said the election was marred by violence and irregularities, and as such, should not have stood.

He said the party would stand behind its candidate, Jones Onyereri, to seek for a better judgment at Court of Appeal that would represent the true mandate of the people.

According to him, “We feel very bad over the judgment. We look at it as one that has deprived people of their right of participation in politics. It is a rape of people’s representation.

“On behalf of PDP in Orlu zone, we will fight to ensure that such judgment does not stand and will support our candidate to appeal for a better judgment.

“If we allow such judgment to stand, that means people can use violence, intimidation and all sorts of tricks and powers to impose themselves against the will of the people.”

In the same, some political leaders in the area including Chief Chris Anyiam, Nze Eze Ugochukwu among others, had all kicked against the tribunal verdict, insisting that it was an aberration to the ethos of democracy.

Ugochukwu, who was the Director General of Jones Onyereri’s campaign organisation lampooned the judgment as spooky, contentious, crooked and invalid.

Also, Anyiam said, “the judgment is a very wrong signal for democracy in Nigeria. We reject such judgment and we feel it is not just about Jones Onyereri, it is about the sane society; a society that should rely on free and credible election for future democracy development.

“We have advised Jones to appeal. Worst off, there should be a rerun so that the whole world would see where the people’s mandate lies.”
