Labour Party Postpones Congresses, Constitutes 46-Member Convention Committee
The Labour Party (LP) has announced the postponement of its ward, local government, and state congresses, as well as its national convention initially scheduled to commence on Thursday, March 26, 2026. The decision aims to provide wider participation in the party’s ongoing membership re-registration exercise.

A statement issued in Abuja by the Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Interim National Chairman, Ken Eluma Asogwa, confirmed the shift. The original timetable had earmarked ward congresses for March 26, local government congresses for March 28, state congresses for March 31, and the national convention for April 11, 2026.
The decision followed a combined stakeholders’ meeting involving members of the Interim National Working Committee and representatives of labour unions. According to the statement, the postponement will allow party members and prospective Nigerians ample opportunity to engage fully in the registration exercise.
In a parallel move to strengthen oversight, the party inaugurated a 46-member Congress and Convention Committee to supervise the exercise. The committee is chaired by Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, representing Isiala Ngwa South/Isiala Ngwa North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. Other notable members include Comrade Salisu N. Mohammed, Hon. Obinna Aguocha, Hon. Amaobi Ogah, Hon. Ibe Okwara, Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, and Mrs. Imaobong Ufot, among others.
During the inauguration, the National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, emphasised the need for diligence, impartiality, and commitment. She urged committee members to utilise the postponement period to ensure thorough preparations, guaranteeing seamless congresses and conventions.
The party has appealed to its members, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and supporters nationwide for understanding, assuring that a revised timetable will be communicated in due course.
Akahi News gathered that this strategic postponement is seen as an effort to strengthen party structures and enhance inclusivity ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
