In a decisive step toward transforming Kogi State into a major economic and aviation hub, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has officially handed over contract letters for the construction of the proposed Zariagi International Airport to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and Gamji Nigeria Limited.
The presentation, which took place on Wednesday at the Government House in Lokoja, marks a significant milestone in the state’s ambitious infrastructure drive.

A “Legacy Project” with Economic Promise
Describing the airport as a “legacy initiative,” Governor Ododo said the project reflects his administration’s commitment to economic growth, improved connectivity, and sustainable development.
He assured that the selection of contractors followed a rigorous and transparent procurement process, pledging the full support of the state government to ensure timely delivery of a world-class aviation facility.
The governor also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for granting the necessary approvals for the project.
Akahi News learnt that Ododo highlighted Kogi’s historical relevance in Nigeria’s aviation story, noting that one of the earliest aircraft landings in the country occurred within the state—making the absence of a functional airport a long-standing gap his administration is now determined to address.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Victor Atuluku, disclosed that the airport project underwent extensive planning and design within the 2025 fiscal year.
He outlined that the development would include critical components such as landside infrastructure, a modern terminal building, and advanced airside facilities.
According to him, CCECC will handle core technical works, including runway and terminal construction, while Gamji Nigeria Limited will oversee the perimeter fencing.
Akahi News learnt that the airport will feature a 3.6-kilometre runway capable of accommodating large aircraft, including heavy cargo planes.
The project is expected to occupy approximately 4,000 hectares of land, with provisions for future expansion.
It will also include dedicated cargo terminals and warehouses, positioning Kogi as a regional logistics hub with an estimated annual passenger traffic of about 250,000.
Contractors Assure Quality Delivery
Representatives of the contracting firms expressed confidence in the project and pledged adherence to global standards.
Zhou Dongping, Executive Director of CCECC Nigeria Ltd, assured that the company would deliver the project within the agreed timeline while maintaining international best practices.
Similarly, Mr. Salau Mutalib of Gamji Nigeria Limited commended the governor’s vision and pledged strict compliance with quality and safety standards.
