By Ernest Nwokolo, Abeokuta
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo at the weekend said that the collapse of the marriage between his son, Olujonwo, and the daughter of his friend and prominent businessman, Sir Kessington Adebutu, will not affect their relationship.
Obasanjo has also lauded Adebutu for rendering what he considered as “marvelous service” to Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, and Egbaland.
The former president, who spoke for the first time on the matter more than two years after the marriage between their children collapsed, said they got married of their own volition and so he and Adebutu should not be blamed for the abrupt end to the union. Olujonwo and Temitope got married in 2017, but they broke barely a year after.
Obasanjo spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, during the investiture of Adebutu as the first honorary member of Abeokuta Club, which also coincided with the Club’s 45th President Party.
The elder statesman said the breakdown of the marriage between their two children would not affect his relationship with the Odole Oodua.
He noted that his relationship with Adebutu would remain cordial despite the breakdown of the marriage between their estranged children.
Obasanjo also said the old Gateway Hotel, Abeokuta, would have still remained in derelict state if Adebutu had not shown interest in it by investing and transforming it into The Park Inn (a five star hotel), stressing that was service and commitment to the development of Egbaland.
Obasanjo, who is one of the vice patrons of the club, saluted the honoree, saying the conferment of honorary membership on him by Abeokuta Club was worthwhile and deserving.
The former president said: “The honoree has rendered marvelous services to Egbaland. The Park Inn, which is the old Gateway Hotel, would have still remained derelict if not for the services, commitment of the honoree.
“One of the things you never said about him and I wonder why the citation left that out; you know not too long ago, my son and your daughter, on their own, decided to get married but what happened to their marriage is between them, not between us.
“Odole is our in-law and not just ordinary in-law but in-law from a distinguished family. Mama Ibeji on his right is from Ake, (she is) daughter of Toye Coker.”
In his address, President of Abeokuta Club, Mr Tokunbo Odebunmi, pointed out that Adebutu, who is popularly called ‘Baba Ijebu,’ was conferred with the honor in recognition of his immense contributions to the economic development of Egbaland and mankind.
