The Phoenix currently play in the NIHL, the semi-professional leagues underneath Britain’s highest level of the sport, the EIHL.

They are in Division Two – South, and currently sit second in the 2019/20 standings having won each of their two matches played this season.

Cech has penned a deal with the Phoenix to be their third-choice goaltender, and he admitted his delight at being able to get back to playing the sport he loves.

He wrote on Twitter: “Luckily my job at Chelsea doesn’t stop me in my spare time from playing the game I loved as a kid and which I’ve been playing for years.

“While being a professional footballer I couldn’t play the game for obvious reasons. Now I can.”

The 37-year-old will combine playing for the Phoenix with his role as Chelsea’s technical and performance adviser. He will train with his new club when his schedule allows.

“The signing of Petr is massive for the Phoenix,” said Guildford head coach Andy Hemmings. “He is a great guy who trains hard and I cannot wait to see him make his debut.”

Phoenix wrote on Twitter that Cech will make his debut on Sunday, with Guildford taking on Swindon Wildcats 2.
