Raheem Sterling: England and Manchester City star racially abused by Bulgaria fan at Wembley Stadium

Raheem Sterling suffered racial abuse from a Bulgaria fan during England’s Euro 2020 qualifying victory at Wembley on Saturday.

The Manchester City star is understood to have been heckled with a racist remark during the first half of the Euro 2020 qualifier.

Sterling and Harry Kane were the stars of the show for the Three Lions, with the winger’s goal and assist and the striker’s hat-trick helping Gareth Southgate’s side to a 4-0 win.

But the gloss of the victory has been dulled by the latest report of racism within the game, for which Sterling is a key figure in the fight against.

According to the Press Association, a Wembley steward heard an individual in the Bulgaria section of the ground heckle Sterling. The male supporter was then ejected from the national stadium and handed over to the police, with the FA confirming the incident in a statement.

It is also understood Sterling was not told about the incident during the game, and he apparently did not hear it himself.

The FA’s security team instead told the forward after the match to make him aware of the process, and UEFA were also informed.

The Metropolitan Police has confirmed the male was arrested and taken to a north London police station on suspicion of an aggravated public order offence.

Following enquiries, he was released with no further action.

An FA spokesperson said: “We can confirm that an individual, who was seated in the away section of the stadium, was ejected and subsequently arrested for discriminatory abuse during the England v Bulgaria match.

“Wembley Stadium operates a zero tolerance policy on anti-social and discriminatory behaviour and anyone found guilty will be ejected and reported to the police,” the statement added.
