Sporting activities to return in CRS as House of Assembly Committee visits Sports’ Ministry

The Cross River State House of Assembly has said it would do everything within it powers to draw the state Governor’s attention to the dying sporting spirit in the state.

The Assembly, headed by the Chairman Committee on Youths and Sports Development, Hon. Francis Ovat, in a visit to the State’s Ministry of Youth and Sports Development on Wednesday directed the Ministry to furnish the Committee with relevant information to enable the House address critical issues facing them.

Ovat, who is also the Member representing Obubra II State Constituency and former Commissioner in the Cross River State Sports Commission, added that the idea is to get firsthand information and familiarise with its officials, which will in turn open up a space for the development of sports in the state.

On her part, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Mrs. Mary-Jane Ebri, stated that the duty of the ministry is to mould the youths in other to contribute meaningfully to the society. “But, we are currently faced with issues of funding, lack of sufficient office spaces and lots more”, she said.

Mrs. Ebri also appealed that there is need for facilities at the NYSC orientation camp to be ungraded, adding that, “Cross River State is faced with a high risk of losing the orientation camp to another state if nothing is urgently and adequately done.”

Speaking earlier during the Assembly visitation, the Director of Sports, Cross River State Sports Commission, Mr Jude Amadi, expressed hope for a better future because the Commission’s former member, Hon. Frank Ovat is now the chairman of the committee. He added that, “He (Ovat) is familiar with the challenges we are facing, so, we are expecting him to make a difference.”

Meanwhile, the Vice Chairman of the Committee, Rt Hon. Mathew Olori, promised that, “the committee would do everything within its powers to draw the Governor’s attention and hopefully, sports would be given its desired attention.”

Olori also urged the Ministry and its Commission to continue to be committed in moulding individual talent because they have no idea of where sports would take them to.

The Secretary of the Youth and Sports Development Committee, Mr. Kingsley Ntor, was also in attendance.
