Super Cup: How Chelsea could produce a shock result and beat Liverpool in Istanbul

Frank Lampard is vying for his first trophy as Chelsea boss on Wednesday night as the Blues compete with Liverpool in the first all-English Super Cup game.

Lampard’s Premier League managerial debut ended in disaster, with the west London side on the wrong end of a 4-0 thumping at Manchester United.

Victory in Istanbul, which is live on talkSPORT, would go some way to making amends for the setback at Old Trafford.

So how exactly can Chelsea produce an upset?

talkSPORT.com looks through some of the key ways the Blues can make their advantage count as they go head-to-head with Jurgen Klopp’s men.

ALTERING THEIR GAME PLAN

Lampard’s men were punished three times on the counter-attack against the Red Devils, a common occurrence during their pre-season schedule.

The switch in formation Lampard has implemented (4-2-3-1) is only a small alteration from the one his predecessor, Maurizio Sarri, stuck with during his one-year stint in charge (4-3-3).

However, it was very much a structured, positional style of play under Sarri.

When the ball was lost, enough bodies were around to win possession back more times than not.

On Sunday, when Chelsea’s Lampard lost the ball they were over-committed and left wide open to be cut open by United’s blistering pace on the break – and duly they were to devastating effect.

This is something Lampard must address sooner rather than later.

Failure to do so against Liverpool would spell disaster, and could result in the same sort of scoreline, if not worse, than what occurred in the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

Quite simply a change of approach is needed for the Super Cup encounter, especially in mind of the fact Jurgen Klopp’s side are far more proficient than United at winning the ball higher up the pitch.

HIT THE TARGET

Well, for a start be more clinical. The post-match stats told a different story to the result.

Chelsea had more possession. They had more corners. They had more shots. And they had more shots on target.

The Blues had by far the better of the first half and started the second half brightly, before they quite literally collapsed.

Take your chance and you’ll stand a chance of winning a football match. It’s as simple as that.

BARKING UP THE RIGHT TREE

The resurgence of Ross Barkley has been a real positive for Lampard.

The former Everton man had an excellent pre-season and fully deserved his spot in the starting XI for the trip to Old Trafford.

He appears to be thriving in a more central role, with his long-busting runs from midfield causing United problems in the first half on Sunday.

The less mobile Fabinho could struggle with this, but ultimately it’s up to Chelsea to take their chances when they get into more threatening positions, but Barkley could well be key to their chances.

WILLIANT RETURN?

Willian missed Sunday’s 4-0 defeat at United, so news of him travelling with the squad to Istanbul for the Super Cup final is certainly a much-needed boost for Lampard.

The Brazilian’s involvement at the Copa America – a competition the hosts won by beating Peru in the final on July 7 – meant he was unavailable for the Premier League opener.

He has recently been nursing a knee injury – which prevented him from taking part in the final – but is now reportedly closing in on a return to first-team action.

Lampard’s side looked light in certain areas against the Red Devils, so Willian will be expected to balance that up with an appearance in Wednesday’s final.
