15-Year-Old Sentenced to 7 Years for Attempted Assassination of Colombian Presidential Hopeful

A Colombian juvenile court has sentenced a 15-year-old gunman to seven years in juvenile detention for the attempted assassination of presidential hopeful, Miguel Uribe Turbay, during a political rally in Bogotá last June.

The teenager, whose identity remains undisclosed due to his age, was convicted of attempted murder rather than homicide, in line with legal restrictions regarding minors.
Akahi News gathered that upon his arrest, the boy wept and confessed, saying: “I did it for money for my family.”
Turbay, a senator and prominent member of the right-wing Democratic Centre party, had been a leading contender for the party’s nomination ahead of the 2026 presidential election.

In a dramatic turn, his father, Miguel Uribe Londoño, declared his own presidential campaign earlier this week, stating that his decision was aimed at carrying forward his son’s legacy.
The case has reignited debate in Colombia about juvenile justice, poverty-driven crime, and the increasing vulnerability of political leaders in the country’s volatile political climate.
