Mixed Reactions Trail Nigeria’s Narrow Victory in Uyo
Nigerian football fans have expressed mixed feelings following the Super Eagles’ 2–1 victory over Lesotho in Friday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, held in Uyo.
Goals from William Troost-Ekong and Akor Adams secured the win for Nigeria, but the performance left many supporters far from satisfied. With the result, the Super Eagles strengthened their position in the qualifiers ahead of their next fixture against the Benin Republic on Tuesday.
Nwabali Faces Criticism from Fans
A major talking point after the game centred on goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, whose performance drew sharp criticism on social media. Several fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice their displeasure, comparing him unfavourably to Cameroon’s Andre Onana.
@middlechighld wrote: “Nwabali is no different from Onana. His goalkeeping decisions are almost comical.”
@jaustinuche added: “Nwabali needs to be benched. His performance was absolutely horrendous.”
@muawiya_sarina pleaded: “Nwabali should not start in our next game, please.”
Another user, @mimshach_md, commented jokingly, “If someone doesn’t give Nwabali a spank on the head in that dressing room, I’ll be upset.”
Fans Call for Tactical Improvement
Beyond the goalkeeper debate, other supporters expressed concern over what they described as a lacklustre team performance.
@RockyPosh observed, “Not an impressive performance though.”
@Lilwizprince remarked, “Congratulations on winning the battle, but the war ain’t gonna come this easy! Make una do better.”
Some, however, maintained a hopeful tone.
@Fazlurfarah posted: “Well, after all the wobbling and fumbling of this team and the stupidity of @thenff, this is still a good result. I believe Nigeria will still qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”
Yet, not all were optimistic.
@bodybyamadi1 noted: “Nigeria’s probably gonna miss their second straight World Cup tournament, and I’m fine with that. This team isn’t ready for the big stage — just focus on AFCON and international matches. I’ll still support them, but still.”
Looking Ahead to the Benin Republic Clash
With just one group game remaining, the Super Eagles will face Benin Republic on Tuesday in what could determine their World Cup qualification fate.
Observers told Akahi News that head coach Finidi George must address defensive lapses and improve attacking cohesion if Nigeria hopes to secure a convincing result in Uyo.
While the team’s win against Lesotho offers relief, fans remain divided — united only by their desire to see the Super Eagles return to the global stage after missing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
