25 Years of Faithful Service: Rev. Fr Martin Adekoyejo Obiyemi Reflects on His Priesthood Journey

As he marks a remarkable 25 years in the Catholic priesthood, Rev. Fr Martin Adekoyejo Obiyemi, currently serving at St Anthony Catholic Parish, Igbajo, Osun State, has offered a moving reflection on his spiritual journey, formative experiences, and enduring vision for the Church during an exclusive interview with Joseph Iyaji, the host of the Yahe-Yala People’s Forum.

Born on 2nd July 1971, Rev. Fr Obiyemi hails from Ifewara, Osun State, where his early years were shaped by a deeply devout Catholic family. He began his primary education in his hometown before proceeding to Ilesa, and later received his priestly formation at the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Seminary, Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo State. In his words, the priesthood was not a mere career choice but a divine calling shaped by a home environment rich in prayer, discipline, and Catholic values.

Reflecting on the formative years of his life, the priest credited his late father as a key influence. “My father was not just a devout Catholic; he was a living catechism,” he remarked with emotion. “His prayer life, leadership in Church, and commitment to the rosary became my earliest exposure to the Catholic faith—even before formal catechism began.” He also acknowledged the positive influence of German missionary priests who served in his region, whose passion for evangelisation inspired him greatly.

Fr Obiyemi described a particularly transformative moment in his priesthood when, during a period of deep internal crisis and uncertainty, he devoted himself to intense, sleepless prayers. “In that silence and suffering, I heard God clearly. It was a message of consolation and clarity. It deepened my conviction that I am never alone in this sacred calling.”

When asked what motivated him to pursue the priesthood, Fr Obiyemi recounted an innate desire to clarify the truths of the Catholic faith amidst a growing tide of religious misinformation from other denominations. “I saw Catholics around me getting confused by distorted teachings. I wanted to be a voice of clarity and truth, rooted in Catholic doctrine,” he shared.

Throughout his 25 years of ministry within the Osogbo Catholic Diocese, Fr Obiyemi has served in various parishes, leaving behind legacies of pastoral care, youth mentoring, and community development. One of his proudest contributions, he revealed, has been his passionate work with young people, especially those struggling to discern their vocations or find purpose in life.

He categorised the universal challenges facing many youths into three primary areas: getting the right education, securing employment, and finding a life partner. “When these three areas are stable,” he explained, “about 75% of the burden is lifted. And when a young person has that stability, they can better listen to the voice of God in their hearts.”

Touching on the evolution of society and the Church, Fr Obiyemi admitted that adapting to technological changes and shifting cultural values has not always been easy. However, he maintains a firm belief in the timeless power of truthful preaching, deep prayer life, and active pastoral presence. He embraces tools like social media not as distractions but as opportunities for evangelisation, especially among young Catholics.

On mentorship, Fr Obiyemi once again pointed to his father as the greatest example of integrity, leadership, and piety. He also referenced the model set by older priests and missionary fathers, whose simplicity, sacrificial lives, and consistency left lasting impressions.

Discussing the challenges of parish leadership, Fr Obiyemi acknowledged that the task of shepherding diverse congregations often includes conflicts, administrative bottlenecks, and emotional exhaustion. However, he views these trials not as setbacks but as chances to grow in patience and wisdom. “God uses every storm to purify and strengthen His servant,” he affirmed.

On the delicate subject of fostering unity in diverse parishes, Fr Obiyemi explained that understanding the people’s cultural background and listening without prejudice are key. “Inclusivity in the Church is not just about programmes. It’s about presence—being available, approachable, and prayerfully discerning how to unite hearts without losing sight of the Gospel.”

As the interview drew to a close, Fr Obiyemi addressed those discerning the priesthood. His advice was sincere and rich with experience: “Let your desire be anchored in love for God, not in running away from life’s struggles. Be honest, be prayerful, and seek guidance from those who walk ahead of you in the journey of faith.”

Asked about the most joyful moments in his ministry, Fr Obiyemi offered a profound insight into his inner disposition. “I am always happy and joyful,” he said. “That is my secret to sound health.” He explained that even during times of internal crisis, he never allowed sorrow or discouragement to overwhelm him. “Nobody forced me to become a priest. So when obstacles come, I simply put them behind me.” He added that his joy is not dependent on circumstances but flows from a deep sense of purpose and trust in God. Even when he encountered some of the most difficult personalities — “the saddest and narcissistic types,” as he described them — he approached them with wisdom and calm, seeking to influence them positively. His ability to remain joyful, he noted, has not only sustained his priesthood but also enabled him to be a source of encouragement to others.

Looking forward, Rev. Fr Martin Obiyemi’s vision for the Church remains bold and faith-filled. He hopes for a more united, vibrant Church, especially within the Osogbo Diocese—a Church that listens to her people, speaks boldly against injustice, and remains deeply rooted in Eucharistic spirituality. Personally, he hopes to spend his next years investing more intentionally in Catholic education and vocation promotion.

He concluded the interview with heartfelt words of prayer and admonition, invoking blessings upon his fellow priests, the laity, and the Akahi News Media for its commitment to showcasing the voices of faith leaders.

As Fr Obiyemi marks this silver jubilee, his life stands as a reflection of steadfast devotion, pastoral courage, and humble leadership in a rapidly changing world. His journey serves as an inspiration not only to young clergy but to all believers striving to live authentically for Christ.
