The Abia State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against child trafficking with the arrest of multiple suspects and the rescue of several stolen children and infants across Abia, Lagos, Anambra, Ebonyi, and neighbouring states.

Intelligence-Led Operations Yield Results
Akahi News learnt that the success followed weeks of intelligence-driven investigations and coordinated operations by detectives of the Command. In one disturbing case, operatives arrested Mrs Chinasa Ukachukwu alongside one Adaoma Sunday after Chinasa reportedly left her home with four children and returned several days later with only one.
According to police sources, suspicion was immediately raised by the unexplained disappearance of the three children. Acting swiftly on actionable intelligence, detectives tracked the missing minors to different locations across state lines, rescued them, and reunited them with their families.
Observers noted that the case exposed the increasingly sophisticated methods used by traffickers to move children quietly across communities and states, often relying on personal trust and family proximity to evade detection.
Major Trafficking Ring Dismantled in Aba and Obingwa
In another coordinated operation, the Abia State Police Command dismantled a large child trafficking network operating within Aba and Obingwa areas of the state. Ten suspects were arrested during the raid, while eight infants and ten children were rescued from what investigators described as a well-organised syndicate.
Akahi News gathered that the children were allegedly stolen under various guises, including fake marriage arrangements, offers of caregiving, and promises of better living conditions. These tactics, police said, were deliberately designed to exploit economic hardship and emotional vulnerability among families.
Following the operation, all rescued children and infants were safely reunited with their biological parents after due identification and verification processes. The suspects have since been charged to court and are expected to face prosecution in accordance with the law.
Cross-State Dimension Raises Fresh Concerns
The involvement of multiple states in the trafficking operations has once again highlighted the transnational and interstate nature of child trafficking in Nigeria. Analysts believe that weak coordination between communities, poor documentation, and economic pressures continue to fuel the crime.
According to reports monitored by Akahi News, traffickers often take advantage of porous borders between states to move victims quickly, making recovery more complex without timely intelligence sharing.
Police Reaffirm Zero-Tolerance Stance
Reacting to the development, the Abia State Police Command reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on child trafficking, describing the crime as a grave violation of human rights and a threat to societal stability.
The Command urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to remain vigilant, warning against releasing children to unknown persons under any pretext. Police authorities also encouraged residents to promptly report suspicious movements or arrangements involving minors to the nearest police station.
A Call for Collective Responsibility
While commending the police for the successful operations, civil society observers stressed that tackling child trafficking requires collective responsibility. Beyond law enforcement, they argue, community awareness, parental caution, and stronger social support systems are critical to preventing such crimes.
As investigations continue, Akahi News gathered that the Abia State Police Command has intensified surveillance and intelligence gathering to dismantle remaining trafficking networks and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
