Actor Williams Uchemba Advises SMEs on Distinguishing Cash Flow from Profit

Nollywood actor and entrepreneur Williams Uchemba has shared vital advice for small and medium-scale business owners, highlighting the importance of understanding the difference between cash flow and profit.

In an Instagram video shared on Tuesday, Uchemba explained that putting money into a business does not automatically translate to profit until the initial capital is fully recovered. “If you invest one million naira into a business, you’ve not started making money until that one million naira has returned from customers,” he stated.
Uchemba noted that many entrepreneurs mistake handling cash for making profit, a misconception that often leads to dipping into their capital and running out of funds for restocking. He emphasised proper bookkeeping practices, saying: “If you buy something for ₦2,000 and sell it for ₦2,300, you bring out that ₦2,000 because it’s not your own. Your money there is ₦300. Don’t go and start eating the ₦2,000 thinking you’re making money.”
He further explained that in Igbo, this practice is referred to as ‘Isiego’, meaning separating capital from profit.
Uchemba, who also runs Prosthesis Entertainment and the Williams Uchemba Foundation, stressed that poor money management and failure to maintain proper records are major reasons many small businesses collapse within a short period.
