ADC Chieftain Accuses Tinubu Government of Targeting Opposition Members
A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Idris Kalgo, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of selectively targeting opposition members for investigations while protecting ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) politicians from scrutiny. The allegation raises questions about fairness, accountability, and the state of democracy in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections.

Selective Enforcement of Investigations
Speaking on Trust TV, Kalgo questioned why enforcement of investigations appears to be applied unevenly across political lines.
“Why is it only ADC members who are being pursued?” he asked, highlighting the perception that opposition politicians face disproportionate legal scrutiny compared to their ruling party counterparts.
He argued that this selective approach undermines public trust in government institutions and fuels a perception of bias in the enforcement of laws.
Alleged Double Standards Between APC and Opposition Members
Kalgo criticised what he described as a double standard in governance. According to him, members of the APC are largely immune from scrutiny, while opposition figures, particularly those in the ADC, are subject to arrests and ongoing investigations.
“As long as you are a member of the APC, you are safe. You are not corrupt. But the moment you leave, you are suddenly labeled corrupt and targeted,” he stated.
He further cited the example of politicians who switched allegiance without facing legal consequences. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, former running mate to Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 elections, was highlighted as someone who joined the APC yet reportedly faces no active legal challenges.
“Where is he now?” Kalgo asked, drawing attention to what he described as inconsistencies in accountability.
Questioning Inaction Against Former APC Governors
Kalgo also referenced former APC governors, including Yahaya Bello, questioning why legal action has not been taken despite previous allegations of misconduct.
“We have seen attempts at arrests, even at airports, but ultimately they remain free. Why is democracy applied selectively?” he asked. He suggested that these inconsistencies in enforcement erode confidence in democratic institutions and foster cynicism among the electorate.
Alleged Political Strategy Ahead of 2027 Elections
According to Kalgo, the crackdown on ADC members is not coincidental but a strategic effort to weaken opposition momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“These people are capable of challenging power. That’s why they are afraid,” he asserted, arguing that the selective targeting of opposition figures is aimed at preserving the dominance of the ruling party.
He warned that such actions, if unchecked, could deepen political tension and discourage active citizen participation in the democratic process.
Call for Genuine Democratic Governance
Kalgo concluded by emphasising the urgent need for fairness, accountability, and genuine democracy in Nigeria. He stressed that Nigerians are increasingly dissatisfied with poor governance and expect leaders to respect their voices.
“People are tired of poor governance. Nigerians want their voices heard, and leaders should allow democracy to flow,” he said, urging the government to apply the law equally to all political actors, regardless of party affiliation.
