ADC Urges Tinubu Government to Clarify Alleged Coup Plot Linked to Independence Day Cancellation

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to provide transparent information regarding the alleged coup plot reportedly connected to the cancellation of the country’s 65th Independence Day celebration, according to a report by News360 Nigeria.
In a statement released on Monday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC urged the government to “address the nation transparently if any threat truly exists,” warning against the politicisation of national security matters.
As gathered by Akahi News, the statement followed widespread reports claiming that the October 1 Independence Day parade was cancelled due to a foiled military coup attempt. However, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) swiftly denied any link between the two incidents, describing the reports as false and misleading.

“The ADC has been following reports of an alleged coup plot involving some arrested military officers and claims that a former southern governor is under investigation for allegedly funding them,” Abdullahi said.
“While we strongly oppose any action that threatens Nigeria’s constitutional order, we are equally worried about the possibility of using such allegations to justify political witch-hunts, suppress dissent, or manipulate public opinion,” he added.
According to Akahi News, the party’s statement reflects growing unease among Nigerians about conflicting official communications from the government and military authorities concerning the reported coup attempt.

He further warned that using the alleged coup as a political tool could erode democratic values, undermine civil liberties, and create unnecessary tension within the country.
