Adeleke Grants Independence Day Amnesty, Frees 36 Inmates Across Osun

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has pardoned thirty-six inmates from correctional facilities across the state in commemoration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary.

A Gesture of Mercy and Justice
The governor, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, described the amnesty as a reflection of compassion, renewal, and the spirit of freedom that Independence Day represents. According to him, the government remains committed to justice but also to giving deserving citizens a second chance at reintegration.
“This amnesty is not only a gesture of freedom but also a call for rehabilitation and a fresh start for these individuals,” Adeleke stated.
Who Benefited from the Pardon
Akahi News gathered that the pardoned inmates were largely convicted of minor offences such as stealing and conspiracy, with many already serving substantial portions of their sentences.
From the Ilesa Correctional Centre, 29 inmates including Kehinde Ganiyu, Isiaka Mohammed, Oluwatosin Femi, and Rotimi Paul were released. At the Ile-Ife Correctional Centre, seven others including Yusuf Ola, Oyedeji Sunday, and Ogunola Rafiu also benefitted.
The full list released by government officials highlights men and women across different communities in Osun, symbolising what observers have described as “a deliberate move to promote peace and social stability.”
Broader Implications for Osun
Analysts believe the development may ease congestion in Osun correctional centres while also strengthening Adeleke’s image as a people-centred leader. Similar gestures in the past have often been seen as part of efforts to mark significant national celebrations with acts of goodwill.
Meanwhile, Akahi News learnt that state officials have tasked beneficiaries to embrace rehabilitation programmes and avoid actions that could return them to custody.
Related Updates in Osun
This move comes shortly after the Ooni of Ife crowned 20 new traditional rulers in Osun, a development covered by Akahi News. It also follows widespread security concerns in parts of the state, such as the recent unrest where angry youths reportedly burnt a monarch’s home, reported by Akahi News.
Governor Adeleke’s Independence Day pardon has been praised as a humanitarian step, though some critics argue that consistent reforms in the justice system are needed to address the root causes of prison overcrowding.
For now, the 36 released inmates begin a new chapter, with state authorities urging them to reintegrate productively into society.
