Adeleke’s Alliance with APC Sparks Backlash as Accord Candidates Face 2027 Electoral Uncertainty

Governor Ademola Adeleke’s decision to coordinate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election campaign in Osun State has triggered fresh political tensions within the Accord Party, with some party members threatening to withdraw support from their party’s candidates for the National Assembly and State House of Assembly in the 2027 general elections.

The development has exposed a growing dilemma for the Accord leadership: how to maintain party loyalty and legislative ambitions while its governor is working with the All Progressives Congress (APC), a political platform that many of his supporters previously opposed.

According to a report by Osun Defender published on Monday, October 19, 2026, some Accord members believe Adeleke’s new political alignment has weakened his moral authority to insist that party supporters vote for Accord candidates at the legislative level.

The report also reveals divisions over the performance of incumbent lawmakers, the selection of candidates for the next elections and the political implications of the governor’s relationship with Tinubu.

Why Adeleke’s Relationship with Tinubu Is Causing Concern

Adeleke won the Osun State governorship election on August 15, 2026, on the platform of the Accord Party after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

His subsequent appointment as Osun State Coordinator of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council has generated mixed reactions among party members and political observers.

While supporters of the arrangement believe cooperation with the Federal Government could improve Osun State’s access to federal programmes and development opportunities, some Accord loyalists see the development as a departure from the political expectations that sustained the governor’s movement.

The disagreement is particularly significant because Adeleke and the Accord leadership had previously warned party members against anti-party activities.

At a stakeholders’ meeting in Osogbo, the governor reportedly cautioned members against sponsoring or supporting candidates of other political parties in the forthcoming legislative elections.

The party also warned that members who worked against its candidates could face disciplinary sanctions.

However, some members now argue that the governor’s willingness to work for an APC presidential candidate creates a difficult situation for the party to manage.

Their argument is that political loyalty should not be demanded selectively. If the governor can support a presidential candidate outside his party, they contend, party members should also retain the freedom to assess legislative candidates on their individual records and electoral appeal.

This position, however, does not automatically resolve the question of whether the governor’s political arrangement constitutes a formal breach of party rules. That would depend on the party’s constitution, applicable decisions and the precise terms of the arrangement.

Accord Members Threaten to Reconsider Legislative Support

The Osun Defender report quoted an Accord chieftain in Ikirun, Ifelodun Local Government Area, Kehinde Ademola, as questioning Adeleke’s ability to dictate how members should vote in the National Assembly and State Assembly elections.

Ademola argued that some incumbent lawmakers had performed poorly despite securing return tickets, suggesting that party members could choose alternative candidates whom they considered more capable.

Another party member in Osogbo, Olatunde Azeez, reportedly expressed a similar position, saying he would support candidates based on their popularity and performance rather than party affiliation alone.

These comments suggest that the controversy extends beyond the governor’s relationship with Tinubu. It also reflects dissatisfaction among some party members over legislative representation and the selection of candidates.

For Accord, this creates a potentially serious electoral challenge. A political party may enjoy the popularity of a governor but still struggle to translate that advantage into victories for its legislative candidates if supporters become divided.

Nevertheless, the statements attributed to the members do not establish that the entire party structure has rejected its candidates. They indicate discontent among some individuals, and the extent of that opposition will become clearer as campaigns progress.

Allegations of Pre-Election Violence Complicate the Alliance

The emotional dimension of the controversy centres on allegations of violence during the build-up to the August governorship election.

Some Accord supporters quoted in the report expressed disappointment with Adeleke’s relationship with the APC, recalling incidents in which they alleged that their members were killed or attacked by suspected APC supporters.

Folashade Omoniyi, who described herself as an Adeleke loyalist, questioned how the governor could now work with a party that she and other supporters associated with the alleged attacks.

A youth leader, whose name was withheld in the report, reportedly expressed similar concerns, saying some families were still mourning their losses.

These are serious allegations that require proper investigation and should not be treated as established findings of criminal responsibility without supporting evidence or official determinations.

However, the political significance of the allegations is clear. Where supporters believe they have suffered violence or made personal sacrifices during an election, a subsequent alliance with their former opponents can create feelings of betrayal.

For Adeleke, the challenge is therefore not merely to explain the strategic benefits of his relationship with Tinubu. He must also address the concerns of supporters who believe the new arrangement contradicts the political commitments that motivated their participation in the previous campaign.

A credible reconciliation process would require transparent engagement with affected communities, respect for victims and accountability for any substantiated wrongdoing.

Osun Leaders of Thought Defend Adeleke’s Decision

Despite the criticism, the governor’s political alignment has attracted support from the socio-political group Osun Leaders of Thought.

According to Osun Defender, the group, through a statement issued by Alhaji Gboyega Olaide, argued that cooperation between Adeleke and Tinubu could advance the interests of Osun State.

The group maintained that the relationship could improve access to federal social investment programmes, promote development and help address outstanding concerns surrounding electoral violence and the local government crisis.

Its position reflects a different understanding of political alliances: that cooperation across party lines can provide opportunities to secure benefits that might otherwise be difficult to obtain through confrontation.

Such an arrangement could be advantageous if it produces measurable improvements in infrastructure, social welfare, federal programme delivery and the administration of justice.

However, these benefits remain expectations rather than guaranteed outcomes. The alliance will ultimately have to be judged by its practical results, not simply by statements of support.

The central question is whether the relationship will translate into tangible gains for Osun residents while preserving the political interests of the Accord Party.

The Risk to Accord’s 2027 Legislative Ambitions

The controversy presents several challenges for Accord candidates contesting legislative seats in 2027.

First, disagreements within the party could weaken grassroots mobilisation. Candidates depend on local organisers, ward leaders, volunteers and loyal supporters to communicate their programmes and encourage voter participation. If these structures become divided, campaign effectiveness may suffer.

Second, the governor’s alignment with the APC could create conflicting messages among voters. Supporters may be uncertain about how to reconcile an Accord governor’s endorsement of Tinubu with the need to elect Accord candidates into the National Assembly and State Assembly.

Third, dissatisfaction with incumbent lawmakers could compound the problem. Where party members believe candidates were imposed or have failed to perform, the governor’s influence may not be sufficient to secure their loyalty.

Fourth, the dispute could create opportunities for opposition parties to attract dissatisfied Accord members and voters. Rival candidates may present themselves as alternatives for constituents who feel ignored by their existing representatives.

These risks do not mean Accord candidates are certain to lose. The party could still maintain strong support where candidates have credible records, effective grassroots networks and clear campaign messages.

The outcome will depend on how the party manages its internal disagreements and whether voters distinguish between the governor’s presidential preference and their choices for legislative offices.

Can Adeleke Balance Federal Cooperation with Party Loyalty?

Adeleke’s situation illustrates a broader challenge in Nigerian politics: the tension between political pragmatism and party discipline.

Governors often seek productive relationships with the Federal Government to attract investment, secure projects and improve access to national programmes. Cooperation across party lines is not inherently incompatible with democratic governance.

However, such cooperation becomes politically complicated when a governor’s party is fielding candidates against members of the party he is supporting at another level of the ballot.

The challenge is particularly acute where supporters regard party affiliation as a statement of political identity rather than merely an electoral arrangement.

Adeleke may argue that working with Tinubu serves Osun’s interests. But that argument will carry greater weight if his administration can demonstrate concrete benefits while maintaining transparent communication with Accord stakeholders.

He must also recognise that party members are not necessarily bound to interpret his political calculations in the same way he does.

The Accord leadership, meanwhile, faces the task of clarifying its position, protecting its candidates’ interests and establishing a consistent approach to party discipline.

Without such clarity, disagreements could deepen as the 2027 campaigns intensify.

What the Dispute Means for Osun Politics

The emerging controversy could reshape political relationships in Osun State well before the next general elections.

If Adeleke successfully reconciles his federal political engagement with the expectations of Accord supporters, the alliance could strengthen his influence and potentially improve cooperation between the state and the Federal Government.

If, however, dissatisfied members withdraw their support from legislative candidates, the governor could find himself in the unusual position of retaining substantial personal popularity while his party struggles to secure representation at other levels of government.

That possibility makes the dispute important beyond the immediate disagreement over Tinubu’s campaign.

It raises questions about whether political parties can maintain a coherent identity when their leaders pursue alliances that appear to conflict with the expectations of their grassroots supporters.

It also underscores the importance of candidate credibility, internal democracy and accountability in determining electoral outcomes.

Ultimately, voters will have the final say. They may reward the alliance if they believe it offers practical benefits, or reject its implications if they feel their interests and political commitments have been overlooked.

For now, Adeleke’s relationship with Tinubu remains a political calculation with both potential advantages and significant risks. Whether it strengthens his standing or weakens Accord’s legislative ambitions will depend on the quality of the alliance, the response of party members and the choices Osun voters make in 2027.
