As the Advent season unfolds, Christians around the world are once again called into a sacred moment of waiting — not the passive type, but a waiting filled with hope, purpose, simplicity and holiness. In his Sunday homily themed “Waiting in Hope, Simplicity and Holiness,” Rev. Fr Pius Odediran reminded the faithful that this season is not merely a countdown to Christmas, but a spiritual preparation for the coming of the Lord.

Drawing from the prophetic voice of Isaiah, Akahi News gathered that the promise of a new and righteous King is central to the message of Advent. The prophet speaks of the coming Messiah who will be filled with the Spirit of God — a ruler of integrity, justice, equity and compassion for his people.

This prophecy, Fr Odediran explained, is not only a historical revelation but a present message of hope. It reassures believers that their future is secure in Christ, the promised Messiah — a King who will be different from all others, a King whose reign will bring freedom from evil and oppression.

“There will be peace; they will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain,” Isaiah prophesied.

According to Akahi News, this vision presents a world without fear, a world where the strong do not oppress the weak, and a society built on unity despite differences. In welcoming Christ, the faithful are also called to become bearers of that same peace.

The Message of Hope from St Paul

St Paul’s exhortation further strengthens this theme of hope. He teaches that through steadfastness and the encouragement of the Scriptures, believers are sustained in hope. This hope unites people in faith, prayer and love as they await the fulfilment of God’s promises.

Paul also references the ancient prophecy:

“The root of Jesse shall come, and the one who rises to rule the nations; in him, the nations shall hope.”

Akahi News noted that this message points clearly to Christ as the focal point of human hope — not just for one nation, but for all humanity.

John the Baptist: A Voice Calling for Repentance

In the Gospel reading, the appearance of John the Baptist brings urgency to the message of hope. His cry — “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near” — is a direct challenge and invitation to everyone.

John’s life of humility and detachment from worldly things stands as a living example of what true preparation looks like. He embodied what Fr Odediran described powerfully:
“Sincere humility attracts; lack of humility subtracts.”

Rather than merely avoiding sin, Christians are called to humbly do good, inspire hope in others, and be living witnesses of the promise of eternal life. Through humility, people are drawn closer to God.

What Must We Do This Season?

According to Akahi News, this Advent is a time of personal retreat and deep reflection. It is a season to smooth the rough edges of the heart and cleanse the soul in preparation to receive Christ in a pure state of mind and body.

John’s message echoes the reminder from the Book of Hebrews:

“Without holiness, no one will see the Lord” (Heb 12:14).

Rev. Fr Odediran warned that vanity must not be allowed to rob anyone of salvation. He emphasised that repentance, reconciliation and holiness of heart are the true requirements for a meaningful encounter with Christ.

In light of this, the Church encourages all faithful to take advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, to forgive, to be forgiven, and to prepare spiritually for the coming of the King.

A Season of True Transformation

Beyond decorations, carols and celebrations, Advent is a call to inner transformation. It is a reminder that Christ comes most powerfully into hearts that are humble, clean and ready to receive Him.

As Akahi News continues to share messages of faith, hope and renewal, believers are urged to reflect deeply, live simply, seek holiness and hold firmly to hope — because the King is coming.
