Anambra Police Identify Suspect Behind Violent Agaba Awgbu Masquerade Incident

The Anambra State Police Command has identified a 28-year-old man, Ifesinachi Ezeolu, as the individual responsible for the violent conduct associated with the Agaba Awgbu masquerade, an incident that has sparked public concern and renewed debate over the boundaries of cultural expression and public safety.

Akahi News learnt that the identification followed preliminary investigations and intelligence gathering by security operatives, as the Command moved swiftly to address growing anxiety among residents over the reported misconduct linked to the masquerade.

While reaffirming its respect for cultural and traditional practices, the Police stressed that no masquerade or cultural activity is permitted to violate citizens’ rights through assault, intimidation, harassment, or public disorder.

Police Draw Clear Line Between Culture and Law

In a statement issued by the Command, the Police emphasised that cultural heritage remains an important part of community identity, but must operate within the confines of the law.

According to the Police, masquerade displays or traditional festivities should not become avenues for violence, extortion, or the disruption of public peace. The Command warned that any individual or group found using cultural platforms to engage in criminal behaviour would be dealt with decisively.

Akahi News gathered that the Police have intensified monitoring of cultural events across the state to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents, especially in communities where masquerade activities attract large crowds.

Residents have welcomed the clarification, noting that while traditions deserve respect, citizens must feel safe in their neighbourhoods without fear of harassment or physical harm.

Investigations Ongoing as Police Hunt Other Suspects

Beyond identifying Ezeolu as a principal suspect, the Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing to track down other individuals who may have participated in or supported the violent conduct.

Security sources speaking with newsmen disclosed that operatives are working with local informants and reviewing eyewitness accounts to establish the full chain of responsibility. The aim, according to the Command, is to ensure that all those involved face appropriate legal consequences.

Akahi News understands that this broader investigation is also intended to deter future abuses by sending a strong signal that cultural identity cannot shield criminal actions from the law.

Legal experts have noted that holding individuals accountable within cultural settings strengthens public confidence in the justice system and promotes responsible traditional leadership.

Partnership with Community Leaders for Peaceful Celebrations

In a bid to prevent further tensions, the Police reiterated their commitment to collaborating with community leaders, traditional rulers, youth groups, and organisers of cultural events to promote peaceful and orderly celebrations.

The Command encouraged community stakeholders to sensitise participants on acceptable conduct and to promptly report any suspicious or violent behaviour during festivities. This collaborative approach, the Police said, will help balance the preservation of culture with the protection of lives and property.

Akahi News gathered that similar partnerships have previously helped reduce clashes and street violence during major cultural festivals in parts of the state, reinforcing the value of proactive engagement rather than reactive enforcement alone.

Community elders have also urged masquerade groups to uphold discipline, reminding performers that cultural symbols should reflect honour, respect, and unity rather than fear and aggression.

Public Reassurance and Call for Calm

The Anambra State Police Command assured residents that normalcy is being restored and that adequate security measures remain in place to safeguard lives and property. Citizens were encouraged to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing useful information that could aid ongoing investigations.

Observers say the incident highlights a broader national conversation about regulating cultural displays without eroding heritage, a balance many states continue to navigate.

As the investigation progresses, Akahi News will continue to monitor developments and provide verified updates to the public.
