Angry Youths Set Monarch’s Residence and Office Ablaze in Benue
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
A violent outbreak has shaken Turan community in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State as angry youths attacked and burnt down the residence and office of the Mue Ter Ichongo, His Royal Highness Simon Baver.

Attack Linked to Deadly Jato-Aka Incident
According to reports, the destruction on Wednesday followed the deadly violence that erupted in Jato-Aka a day earlier. Eyewitnesses told journalists that a mob stormed the monarch’s home and office, carted away valuables, and later set both buildings ablaze. The youths allegedly blamed the traditional ruler for the unrest.
Security operatives were deployed to the scene after the attack to restore calm in the community. Akahi News gathered that no casualties were immediately recorded from the arson, but the level of property destruction was extensive.
Community Leaders Appeal for Calm
Community elders and stakeholders in Turan have urged residents to avoid further violence. They called for restraint and cooperation with security agencies to prevent escalation. “We cannot afford another round of bloodshed; peace is the only way forward,” one community leader was quoted as saying.
Security Agencies Launch Investigation
Authorities confirmed that investigations are underway to unravel the circumstances behind both the Jato-Aka killings and the subsequent attack on the monarch’s properties. Akahi News learnt that the police and other security agencies are already working to identify those responsible for the arson.
Rising Tensions in Benue Communities
This incident adds to the growing security concerns in Benue State, a region already troubled by recurrent communal clashes, herder–farmer conflicts, and local unrest. Observers believe the Turan attack underscores the need for proactive conflict resolution measures to prevent reprisals and further destabilisation in the area.
The attack on the Mue Ter Ichongo’s residence highlights the volatile atmosphere in parts of Benue State, where grievances often spill into violent confrontations. As investigations continue, residents are being urged to prioritise peace and allow lawful processes to prevail.
