Army Sets Up New Brigades and Battalions, Plans Recruitment of 28,000 Troops
The Nigerian Army has unveiled fresh military formations across six states in a bid to tighten security and boost rapid response to emerging threats. Akahi News learnt that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shuaibu, made the disclosure on Monday at the opening of the Chief of Army Staff First Bi-Annual Conference 2026 in Abuja.
It is not a child’s play to secure a nation as vast and complex as Nigeria. But when will citizens in volatile communities begin to feel the weight of these new deployments on the ground? That is the question many families are asking as insecurity persists.

New Formations Spread Across Six States
Akahi News gathered that the Army has created new brigades, battalions and operational units to expand its presence in troubled areas. According to Shuaibu, the move is meant to strengthen the Army’s operational posture and shorten response time to security breaches.
Among the formations announced are the 15 Brigade with affiliated units in Anambra and Imo states, the 12 Battalion in Anyigba, and the 226 Battalion in Ganye, Adamawa State. Also listed were the 247 Reconnaissance Battalion in Mubi, Army Headquarters Logistics Base 4 in Gusau, and Army Logistics Base 5 in Ilorin. Operation Savannah Shield in the North Central was also highlighted as part of the expansion.
These units, the Army Chief said, are designed to improve operational reach and support intelligence-led missions. But will more bases translate to safer markets, safer schools, and safer highways for the common man?
Recruitment Drive Targets 28,000 New Personnel
Akahi News had earlier reported that the Federal Government directed the recruitment of additional troops to shore up manpower. Shuaibu confirmed that the establishment of the Depot Nigerian Army in Amasiri, Edda, Ebonyi State, is tied to that directive.
The facility is expected to support the training and deployment of 28,000 new personnel under the ongoing expansion programme. The Army Chief argued that the step would enhance troop levels and improve the force’s ability to disrupt criminal networks.
Yet, recruitment alone does not guarantee results. Can training, equipment and welfare keep pace with the numbers being brought in? For many Nigerians, the answer lies in what happens after the passing-out parade.
Aviation and Joint Operations Playing Bigger Role
It was alleged that the growing role of Nigerian Army aviation assets had become a force multiplier in recent operations. Shuaibu pointed to the North-East theatre, where aviation units enabled the insertion and extraction of troops in the Tumbutu Triangle for the first time.
He also reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to joint operations and inter-agency collaboration. Coordinated missions with foreign partners, he said, had produced notable successes in counter-terrorism efforts.
The Chief of Army Staff praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for backing the Armed Forces through equipment procurement, infrastructure projects and personnel welfare. He added that ongoing interventions, including accommodation upgrades, healthcare services and allowance reviews, were meant to lift morale and combat readiness.
Why This Matters to Nigerians
Security challenges remain widespread. Insurgency in the North-East, banditry and kidnappings in the North-West and North-Central, and secessionist-related violence in the South-East continue to strain communities. In that context, the establishment of new formations signals intent. But intent must match execution.
For parents and young people, stability affects everything from farming and trade to school attendance and university admissions. When communities are unsafe, education suffers. That is why tracking these developments matters beyond the barracks.

What Comes Next
The Army says the new structures will improve response time and enable more effective intelligence-led operations. Shuaibu noted that recent efforts had already helped disrupt criminal networks and restore relative calm in some previously volatile areas.
However, calm must be sustained, not seasonal. The expansion of the Depot Nigerian Army in Amasiri is expected to accelerate the recruitment process. The real test will be deployment, discipline and accountability of the new troops once they are in the field.
For young Nigerians weighing career options, the military expansion may open pathways. But it also raises questions about training standards and civil-military relations. Can the Army maintain professionalism while scaling up quickly? That balance will define public trust.
