Atiku Abubakar Declares 2027 Presidential Bid, Disowns Statement Linking Him to ADC Event

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially declared his intention to run in the 2027 presidential election, disowning a statement credited to him at an African Democratic Congress (ADC) event in Lagos, where he was said to have downplayed his presidential ambition.

Atiku, reacting from his holiday residence in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), distanced himself from the remarks delivered by Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University, Owo, who represented him at the defection ceremony of top political figures into the ADC.
Atiku Disowns Proxy Statement
At the event, Olateju was quoted as saying Atiku’s mission was not centred on personal ambition but on building a better Nigeria. “Atiku Abubakar’s plan is to build a better Nigeria, it’s not about being President. It’s about establishing a government that works for Nigerians,” Olateju reportedly said.
But Atiku has now disclaimed the comment, stressing that it did not reflect his position.
“I did not issue that statement. When people stand in for me at events, we preview my thoughts on the instant subject and what my contribution or intervention will be, so we are on the same page. In this particular instance, there was no engagement with me to distill my thoughts. Prof. Olateju was not speaking for me,” he clarified.
2027 Presidential Ambition Confirmed
The elder statesman went further to reaffirm his commitment to contesting in the next general elections, declaring that Nigeria urgently needs a new direction.
“I will run in 2027. Nigeria needs to be decisively rescued from the intensive care unit it has been consigned. The degeneration in our country, the level of poverty and pain, the anguish, is unacceptable,” Atiku stated.
Political Reactions and Rival Aspirants
Atiku’s reaffirmation comes amid growing speculations about alignments and realignments ahead of 2027. Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has insisted he will not play a secondary role to anyone, while former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has hinted at joining the race.
Meanwhile, the presidency has consistently dismissed the ADC, describing it as inconsequential and lacking electoral strength, while mocking attempts to project it as a viable coalition platform.
Atiku’s statement now sets the stage for another heated presidential contest, with Nigeria’s political landscape already bracing for what promises to be a fiercely competitive 2027 race.
