ATSO National President, Prince Idowu Adewale, Commends Ogun State Chapter

Speaking exclusively with Akahi News during a telephone interview, the National President of the Association of Tutorial School Operators, Prince Idowu Adewale, described the Ogun State convention as evidence that the association’s state chapter was making significant progress.

According to him, the commitment demonstrated by the Ogun State leadership reflects the positive direction in which ATSO is moving, particularly in supporting the national body’s efforts to promote the interests and welfare of tutorial school operators.

He explained that when the national leadership is committed to addressing the concerns and welfare of members, while state chapters actively support and implement the association’s objectives, it demonstrates that the organisation is progressing.

Prince Adewale noted that the Ogun State convention was particularly important because it addressed one of the most pressing developments affecting the education sector: the increasing adoption of computer-based examinations.

He observed that almost all major examinations in Nigeria were progressively adopting digital examination methods, making it necessary for tutorial school operators to understand the changes and adapt their teaching methods accordingly.

He stressed that tutorial school owners could no longer afford to operate with outdated teaching practices when students were increasingly being assessed through computer-based examinations.

According to him, tutorial centres must be adequately equipped, both in terms of facilities and teaching capacity, to prepare learners for the demands of modern examinations.

He further explained that many students who experience difficulties or fail computer-based examinations often return to tutorial centres for additional preparation. Consequently, tutorial school operators must ensure that their centres are sufficiently prepared to provide the necessary digital training.

The ATSO National President emphasised that the responsibility of tutorial operators goes beyond preparing students to pass examinations. They must also ensure that learners acquire the knowledge, skills and technological confidence required to compete successfully in an increasingly digital educational environment.

He maintained that the association remained active, progressive and committed to its responsibilities.

“ATSO is indeed alive and not a dying association,” he affirmed.

WAEC Representative to Address Digital Transformation and the Future of Tutorial Education

One of the major highlights of the Ogun State convention was the participation of a representative of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

The WAEC Branch Controller in Abeokuta, Dr Suberu Lateef Ayobami, was listed as the Chief Guest Speaker at the convention.

His participation was particularly significant given the convention’s focus on repositioning tutorial schools to meet the demands of a digital and competitive educational environment.

Speaking with Akahi News, the ATSO National President disclosed that the Ogun State chapter had taken a commendable step by inviting the WAEC representative to educate members and provide relevant information concerning developments in the examination system.

He described the engagement as a practical approach to ensuring that tutorial operators were not left behind in the ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s examination processes.

The presence of an examination authority at a gathering of tutorial school operators also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to appreciate the importance of collaboration between examination bodies and private educational service providers.

As computer-based testing continues to influence the examination landscape, tutorial centres must recognise that adequate preparation requires more than conventional classroom teaching. Students must also become familiar with computer operations, examination interfaces, time management and the practical demands of digital assessments.

ATSO Ogun PRO Reveals Free Medical Screening, Other Activities

In a separate telephone interview with Akahi News, the Public Relations Officer of ATSO Ogun State, Mr Ojelabi Joel, Chief Executive Officer of MaxWay Group, disclosed that the convention was already underway and that several activities had commenced at the venue.

According to him, a free medical screening exercise was being conducted for both members and non-members of the association.

He explained that the initiative formed part of the activities designed to make the convention beneficial beyond its primary educational and professional objectives.

The medical screening demonstrated the organisers’ consideration for the health and general well-being of participants and other members of the public.

Mr Ojelabi also confirmed the presence of the ATSO National President, Prince Idowu Adewale, at the convention.

He highlighted the importance of the gathering, particularly its focus on recognising outstanding students from the different zones of Ogun State and celebrating members who had contributed to the growth of the association.

The convention’s programme also featured music and other activities designed to promote interaction, unity and a stronger sense of belonging among members.

Ogun State Convention as Preparation for National Convention in Akure

In his exclusive conversation with Akahi News, Prince Idowu Adewale further explained that the Ogun State convention was part of the association’s broader efforts to strengthen its activities ahead of the forthcoming national convention scheduled to take place in Akure.

He commended the Ogun State leadership for demonstrating organisational commitment and providing an example that other state chapters could emulate.

The National President encouraged other state chapters to strengthen their structures, organise meaningful programmes and ensure that members remained actively connected to the association.

He noted that the progress of a national organisation depends significantly on the commitment of its state chapters and their willingness to translate national objectives into practical activities.

He also disclosed that the Edo State Chapter of ATSO was expected to be formally inaugurated on 24 November 2026.

The development, he suggested, was another indication of the association’s efforts to expand its presence and strengthen its organisational structure across the country.

Osun ATSO Governor Commends Ogun State Counterpart

Reacting to the development, the ATSO Governor in Osun State, Pastor Oluwasanmi Fatukasi Amos, commended his Ogun State counterpart for the successful organisation of the convention.

His commendation further reflected the importance of cooperation and mutual encouragement among the different state chapters of the association.

The Ogun State convention has provided an opportunity for state leaders and members to appreciate the value of collective action in advancing the interests of tutorial school operators.

The recognition of brilliant students, professional engagement with an examination authority and the provision of free medical screening also demonstrated the possibility of making ATSO programmes more impactful to members and the wider community.

Why Tutorial Schools Must Embrace the Digital Era

The central message of the 2026 Ogun State convention deserves serious attention from tutorial school operators across Nigeria.

For many years, tutorial centres have played important roles in helping students prepare for examinations such as the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), the National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations and the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

However, the increasing use of computer-based examinations has changed the expectations placed on both students and their teachers.

A student may possess considerable academic knowledge but still encounter difficulties during a computer-based examination because of inadequate computer literacy, unfamiliarity with examination platforms or poor time management.

This makes it necessary for tutorial centres to integrate digital learning and computer-based examination practice into their academic programmes.

Tutorial operators must begin to see computer facilities not merely as additional attractions but as increasingly important tools for effective teaching and examination preparation.

They should invest in functional computers, reliable internet facilities where necessary, CBT practice platforms and tutors who understand the demands of digital examinations.

Equally important is the need to train teachers to adopt modern instructional methods without abandoning the fundamental principles of sound education.

Technology should complement effective teaching, not replace it.

A well-equipped tutorial centre without qualified and committed teachers may still fail to deliver the expected academic results. Therefore, the repositioning of tutorial schools must involve investment in infrastructure, human resources, teaching standards, professional development and responsible management.

The Ogun State convention has brought these issues to the forefront at a time when educational competitiveness increasingly demands innovation and adaptability.

ATSO and the Future of Private Tutorial Education in Nigeria

The Association of Tutorial School Operators has an important responsibility in promoting professionalism, cooperation and improved standards among tutorial school owners.

Tutorial centres occupy a significant position in Nigeria’s educational system, particularly because many students and parents depend on additional academic support to improve examination performance.

However, the sector also faces challenges, including inconsistent standards, inadequate facilities, limited access to modern educational technology and the need for continuous professional development.

An effective association must therefore do more than organise meetings and award ceremonies. It must provide a platform for professional development, information sharing, advocacy, collaboration and the protection of legitimate interests of its members.

The Ogun State convention provides an opportunity to reinforce these objectives.

The participation of the national leadership, the invitation of a WAEC representative, the recognition of outstanding students and members, and the free medical screening all contributed to the broader objectives of the gathering.

More importantly, the convention’s theme challenges tutorial operators to examine their current practices and prepare for the future.

The future of tutorial education will increasingly favour institutions that combine competent teachers, effective academic programmes, modern facilities, digital examination preparation and sound administrative structures.

State chapters must also maintain regular engagement with their members and ensure that the association’s objectives produce measurable benefits at the grassroots level.

The 2026 ATSO Ogun State Convention represents an important step in the association’s efforts to strengthen tutorial school operations and respond to changing educational realities in Nigeria.

Beyond the celebration of outstanding students and the recognition of members, the convention has drawn attention to a critical issue: the need for tutorial centres to adapt to the growing digitalisation of examinations and educational delivery.

The message from the National President, Prince Idowu Adewale, is clear. Tutorial school operators must prepare their institutions for the future rather than continue relying exclusively on traditional methods.

As the association looks forward to its national convention in Akure and the formal inauguration of the Edo State chapter on 24 November, the Ogun State gathering offers a useful example of how state chapters can contribute to the growth of a national professional association.

For ATSO to achieve its objectives, the enthusiasm demonstrated at conventions must translate into continuous professional development, improved teaching standards, stronger institutional structures and better educational outcomes for Nigerian students.

Ultimately, repositioning tutorial schools for greater impact in a digital and competitive era must become a practical commitment shared by every responsible tutorial school operator across Nigeria.

Akahi News will continue to monitor developments within the Association of Tutorial School Operators and other initiatives aimed at improving the quality of education in Nigeria.
