The people of Bekwarra Local Government Area in Cross River State have conferred a prestigious chieftaincy title on Dr. Martha Agba in recognition of her outstanding contributions to humanity and unwavering commitment to community development.

At a colourful ceremony graced by traditional rulers, political leaders, women groups, and enthusiastic youths, Dr. Agba was bestowed with the title Onyie Iritiem I of Ebekwarra, which translates to “Kind-Hearted One.” The event, held at the Bekwarra Traditional Council Hall, showcased the rich cultural heritage of the people as dancers, drummers, and praise singers paid homage to the new titleholder.
A Legacy of Selfless Service
Dr. Agba, a renowned academic and community advocate, has over the years earned a reputation for championing causes that uplift rural communities. From sponsoring educational programmes to supporting healthcare initiatives and women empowerment projects, she has touched countless lives across Cross River State.
Speaking after receiving the honour, Dr. Agba expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Bekwarra people for what she described as a “humbling and motivating recognition.”
“I am deeply honoured to receive this chieftaincy title from the great people of Bekwarra. This is a call to do even more in serving humanity. I dedicate this recognition to God Almighty and to all who work tirelessly for the progress of our communities,” she stated.
Commitment to Rural Healthcare
In what many described as a bold and compassionate move, Dr. Agba announced plans to sponsor and register several less-privileged families into the Cross River State Health Care Insurance Scheme. This initiative, she explained, would ensure that vulnerable rural dwellers gain access to quality and affordable healthcare services without financial hardship.
Community leaders lauded this pledge, noting that rural healthcare remains one of the most pressing needs of people in remote areas.
Endorsement from Bekwarra Leaders
The Bekwarra Traditional Council, speaking through its Chairman, highlighted that the conferment of the title Onyie Iritiem I of Ebekwarra was not only a recognition of Dr. Agba’s philanthropy but also a public declaration of the community’s admiration for her courage, compassion, and vision for a better society.
“Dr. Martha Agba has consistently demonstrated what it means to lead with a kind heart. This honour symbolises our appreciation and our hope that she will continue to serve as a beacon of hope for our people,” the council leader remarked.
A Call for Collective Action
As celebrations filled the air, several dignitaries urged other well-meaning indigenes to emulate Dr. Agba’s humanitarian spirit. They stressed that the development of rural communities requires collective efforts from government, private individuals, and development partners.
With this honour, Dr. Martha Agba joins the ranks of prominent personalities in Cross River State whose philanthropic work has earned them traditional recognition and enduring respect.
