December 23 Declared Idoma Cultural Day

In a major cultural proclamation, the Paramount Ruler of the Idoma Nation, His Royal Majesty Och’Idoma Agabaidu, Elaigwu Odogbo, officially declared December 23 as Idoma Cultural Day.

According to a statement from the royal palace, the annual celebration will now hold at the Och’Idoma Palace, serving as a focal point for preserving and promoting Idoma traditions.

The monarch said the decision was aimed at strengthening unity among the Idoma people and ensuring that cultural values are passed on to future generations.

“Culture is our identity. When culture is weakened, identity fades,” he stated, stressing the need for collective responsibility in sustaining cultural heritage.

Food, Identity and Cultural Pride

The Och’Idoma also highlighted the importance of traditional cuisine in preserving identity, describing food as a vital expression of culture. He referenced dishes such as Okoho soup as symbols of Idoma history and creativity.

Akahi News gathered that plans are underway to upgrade the palace square to international standards, positioning it as a cultural and tourism destination capable of hosting global events.

Carnival as Tool for Youth Empowerment

The convener of the Idoma International Carnival, Edwin Ochai, described the event as a platform for youth engagement, economic empowerment and social stability.

He noted that culture-driven initiatives can reduce youth restiveness by creating opportunities in entertainment, hospitality and the creative economy.

“Culture thrives when people actively participate in it,” he said.

Cultural Celebration with National Participation

The carnival featured colourful cultural displays from across Benue State and neighbouring regions, alongside music, dance and culinary exhibitions. A major highlight was the Okoho soup challenge, which attracted wide participation and showcased Idoma culinary heritage.

Dignitaries at the event included the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, who presented a vehicle to the Och’Idoma in recognition of his leadership and contributions to cultural development.

A New Chapter for Benue’s Cultural Economy

According to Akahi News, the Benue State Government believes the creative fund and annual carnival will strengthen cultural identity, attract tourism investment and stimulate economic growth.

Observers say the initiative positions Benue as a rising cultural destination while reinforcing the role of tradition in national development.
