Bishop Sarah Mullally Becomes First Female Archbishop of Canterbury as Nigerian Anglican Leader Raises Objection

History was made on Wednesday, January 28, as Bishop Sarah Mullally DBE was confirmed as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury, becoming the first woman to occupy the highest office in the Anglican Communion in its over 1,400-year history.

The confirmation ceremony took place at St Paul’s Cathedral, marking a landmark moment for the Church of England and the global Anglican community. Bishop Mullally’s elevation has been widely described as a transformative step for the church, reflecting decades of debate and gradual reforms on women’s leadership within Anglicanism.

Bishop Mullally’s appointment breaks centuries of tradition, positioning her as the spiritual leader of millions of Anglicans worldwide. Observers noted that her confirmation represents a significant shift in ecclesiastical leadership, particularly within the Church of England, which has in recent decades opened episcopal roles to women.

Akahi News gathered that supporters of her appointment view it as a symbol of inclusivity and progress, aligning the church with modern realities while maintaining its spiritual mission.

Nigerian Anglican Primate Voices Strong Opposition

However, the historic development has not been without controversy. The Archbishop of the Church of Nigeria, Most Reverend Henry Ndukuba, openly expressed reservations over Bishop Mullally’s elevation.

According to his remarks, Archbishop Ndukuba described the decision as insensitive to the convictions of a large segment of Anglicans who do not support female headship within the episcopate.

He argued that many Anglican faithful, particularly in parts of the Global South, maintain doctrinal positions rooted in traditional interpretations of scripture, and may find the development difficult to accept.

Deepening Fault Lines Within Global Anglicanism

The contrasting reactions to Bishop Mullally’s appointment have once again highlighted longstanding theological and cultural differences within the Anglican Communion. While churches in Europe and parts of North America have increasingly embraced women in senior clerical roles, provinces in Africa and other regions have remained more conservative.

Akahi News learnt that church observers believe the development could further test unity within the global Anglican family, even as dialogue continues on issues of doctrine, leadership, and authority.

A Moment of Change and Reflection

Despite the criticisms, Bishop Mullally’s confirmation stands as a defining moment in Anglican history. Her tenure is expected to attract global attention, not only for its symbolic significance but also for how it may influence future conversations on leadership, inclusiveness, and unity within the church.

As the Anglican Communion navigates this new chapter, the balance between tradition and reform remains at the heart of ongoing debates shaping its future.
