Burkina Faso Releases 11 Detained Nigerian Air Force Personnel After Diplomatic Talks
Burkina Faso has released 11 Nigerian Air Force (NAF) pilots and crew members nine days after their detention, following high-level diplomatic intervention by the Federal Government of Nigeria, Akahi News gathered.
Diplomatic Engagements in Ouagadougou
The release came shortly after a Nigerian delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, concluded a series of engagements with Burkinabè authorities in Ouagadougou, including talks with Burkina Faso’s leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré. Akahi News learnt that the discussions focused on resolving the matter amicably while reinforcing existing diplomatic and security ties between both countries.

The delegation comprised senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defence, and the NAF Headquarters. According to information obtained by Akahi News, the team was specifically mandated to pursue a peaceful and constructive resolution through dialogue rather than confrontation.
Nigeria’s Preference for Dialogue
A senior official familiar with the mission told journalist Zagazola Makama that the engagement was aimed at fostering mutual understanding, de-escalating tensions, and securing the release of the detained NAF personnel. The source added that Nigeria also used the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to regional cooperation and adherence to international aviation and military protocols.
“The mission pointed to Nigeria’s preference for diplomacy and neighbourly engagement. It was a confidence-building visit designed to strengthen trust and reaffirm shared responsibilities in addressing the complex security challenges confronting the Sahel,” the source reportedly said.
Akahi News gathered that the Nigerian delegation also conveyed Abuja’s enduring commitment to regional security collaboration, sustained dialogue, and respect for international norms, emphasising the long-standing history of cooperation between Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and other members of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
Long-Standing Security Cooperation
Nigeria and Burkina Faso have traditionally collaborated in areas such as security training, intelligence sharing, and regional stabilisation initiatives, particularly in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism across West Africa. Akahi News learnt that these collaborative efforts have been crucial in addressing cross-border security threats that continue to plague the Sahel region.
Observers noted that the incident, though sensitive, provided an opportunity for both countries to reaffirm their shared interests and commitment to regional peace and stability.
Optimism for Stronger Bilateral Relations
Officials on both sides expressed optimism that the successful resolution of the detention would deepen bilateral understanding and reinforce collective efforts to promote peace, stability, and security in the region. According to Akahi News, the outcome is being viewed as a positive signal for diplomacy-led conflict resolution within West Africa.
As security challenges persist across the Sahel, analysts believe that sustained dialogue and cooperation among neighbouring countries remain essential for long-term stability—a position Nigeria appears keen to uphold through its diplomatic engagements.
