Beloved in Christ,
Today is Saturday, the 22nd day in the month of June, year 2024. I am here as usual to share the word of God with you. My name is Joseph Iyaji. In today’s edition of my daily Catholic reflection, we shall learn about the consequences of forsaking God and the importance of trusting in His providence.

In our first reading of today from 2 Chronicles 24:17-25, we see a troubling example of what happens when people turn away from God Almighty. After the death of Jehoiada, the priest, the leaders of Judah convinced King Joash to abandon the temple of the Lord and worship idols. This led to a rapid decline in their spiritual and moral state. The people abandoned their covenant with God, and as a result, they faced severe consequences. When Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada, confronted them about their sins, they reacted with violence, stoning him to death. This act of betrayal was not forgotten by God, and it brought about justice and retribution.
This passage is a powerful reminder of the importance of staying true to our faith and the danger of turning to false idols, whether literal or metaphorical. It shows us that abandoning God and embracing unrighteousness leads to destruction and sorrow.
In our gospel reading of today from Matthew 6:24-34, Jesus teaches us about the futility of serving two masters. He makes it clear that we cannot serve both God and wealth. This passage challenges us to examine our priorities and loyalties. Are we driven by the pursuit of material wealth, or do we trust in God’s provision for our needs as human beings?
Jesus also encourages us not to worry about our lives, what we will eat or drink, or about our bodies, what we will wear. He points out the birds of the air and the lilies of the field as examples of how God provides for His creation. If God cares so much for them, how much more will He care for us, His children? Jesus calls us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, assuring us that all these things will be given to us as well.
This teaching is incredibly relevant in our modern world, where anxiety and the pursuit of material success can often overshadow our spiritual lives. It reminds us that our true security lies not in wealth or earthly possessions, but in the loving care of our Heavenly Father.
Beloved in Christ, our readings of today compel us to reflect on our relationship with God and our trust in His providence. The first reading from 2 Chronicles warns us of the dire consequences of abandoning God, while the gospel reading from Matthew encourages us to place our trust fully in Him and seek His kingdom above all else. Let us heed these lessons, staying faithful to God and trusting in His unwavering care for us.
Beloved in Christ, as we reflect on today’s readings, let us remember that abandoning God and embracing unrighteousness leads to destruction and sorrow. May we learn from King Joash’s tragic fall and instead choose to seek God’s kingdom above all else in Jesus’ name. Amen.
I also pray, may we walk in the light of God’s truth and experience His peace and joy in our lives in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Thank you for joining me today.
