Beloved in Christ, today’s readings invite us to reflect on the power of faith, the importance of sincere prayer, and the need to trust completely in God’s providence. Through the life and mission of the Prophet Elijah, we see how God works wonders through those who remain faithful to Him. In the Gospel, Our Lord Jesus Christ teaches us how to pray and reminds us that forgiveness is at the heart of our relationship with God. These readings challenge us to deepen our prayer life, strengthen our faith, and extend mercy to others as God continually extends mercy to us.

Five Major Lessons from Today’s Readings

1. God Uses Faithful Servants to Accomplish Great Things

Beloved in Christ, in our first reading of today from Sirach 48:1-14, we learn that God performed extraordinary wonders through the Prophet Elijah because of his unwavering faith and obedience. Elijah’s life reminds us that God can use ordinary people to achieve extraordinary purposes when they surrender themselves completely to Him. We are therefore called to remain faithful, even when circumstances appear difficult.

2. Prayer Should Come from the Heart

Beloved in Christ, in our Gospel reading of today from Matthew 6:7-15, we learn that God is not impressed by empty repetition or lengthy words. Jesus teaches us that genuine prayer is a heartfelt conversation with our Heavenly Father. Prayer is not about speaking much; it is about speaking sincerely and trusting that God already knows our needs.

3. God is a Loving Father Who Cares for His Children

In teaching the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus reveals the intimate relationship God desires with us. We are encouraged to approach Him confidently as “Our Father.” This reminds us that we are not abandoned in our struggles. Whether we face economic hardship, family challenges, health concerns, or uncertainty about the future, God remains a loving Father who watches over His children.

4. Forgiveness is Essential for Every Christian

One of the strongest messages in today’s Gospel is the call to forgive others. Jesus clearly teaches that those who seek God’s forgiveness must also be willing to forgive their neighbours. Holding on to bitterness, resentment, or revenge only hardens the heart. As Christians, we must strive to let go of past hurts and embrace reconciliation.

5. A Holy Life Leaves a Lasting Legacy

The memory of Elijah remained alive long after his earthly mission ended because he lived a life dedicated to God. His example teaches us that true greatness is measured not by wealth, fame, or position, but by faithfulness to God’s will. Every Christian should strive to leave behind a legacy of faith, kindness, integrity, and service to others.
