Emmanson Clarifies Viral Reports

Comfort Emmanson, the Ibom Air passenger previously arraigned for allegedly assaulting a purser on board, has refuted claims that she filed a ₦500 billion lawsuit against the Federal Government and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

In a post shared on her Instagram story, Emmanson described the widespread report as false and misleading, stressing that she had not yet initiated any legal action of such magnitude. She assured the public that she would personally announce any future legal steps on her official page.

“I have not taken any such legal action yet. When I eventually do anything of such nature (which is imminent), I will personally update the public myself via my official page,” she wrote.

The Flight Incident

The controversy dates back to an incident on an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos, where Emmanson allegedly refused to switch off her mobile phone during the pre-flight safety announcement. According to reports, she went on to attack a purser who attempted to enforce compliance with aviation safety rules.

The airline subsequently filed charges against her, leading to her arraignment. The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) responded by announcing a lifetime flight ban on Emmanson, a decision that sparked intense public debate before it was later lifted.

Government Intervention and Case Withdrawal

On August 13, following consultations spearheaded by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, the police withdrew all charges against Emmanson. The court subsequently approved the withdrawal and discharged the case, bringing the legal proceedings to a close.

Her recent clarification comes as a direct response to circulating media reports suggesting she had escalated the matter with a multibillion-naira lawsuit against aviation regulators and the Federal Government.

Ongoing Public Scrutiny

The case has continued to attract widespread attention across the country, with public opinion divided over Emmanson’s conduct and the handling of the incident by aviation authorities. While some Nigerians have criticised her actions on the flight, others believe the authorities overreacted, particularly with the announcement of a lifetime ban.

As Emmanson maintains her innocence and signals the possibility of future legal action, the matter remains one of the most talked-about aviation-related controversies in Nigeria this year.
