The Coalition of Oodua Self-Determination Groups (COSEG) has strongly condemned a recent social media post inciting violence against former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, describing the act as both “disgusting and laughable.”

The controversial tweet, published by a user identified as Ebirigbonka (@Ebiri), suggested that Aregbesola should be stoned or killed over his political stance. Reacting in a statement signed by its chairman, Dayo Ogunlana, COSEG said such rhetoric is unacceptable and runs contrary to the Yoruba values of respect for elders and leaders.

Ogunlana stressed that no Yoruba leader should ever be disgraced or attacked on account of political differences, noting that Aregbesola has made significant contributions to the Yoruba cause and Nigeria at large. The group recalled his pivotal role in reconciling feuding factions of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), his efforts in the development of Osun State during his tenure as governor, and his continuous commitment to the progress of the Yoruba race.

“Political choices are personal, and they must be respected. We don’t joke with the safety and wellbeing of Yoruba leaders,” COSEG said, cautioning against attempts to sow division through hate speech or violent incitement.

The coalition also called for renewed peace, unity, and reconciliation among Yoruba leaders, particularly urging an amicable resolution between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Rauf Aregbesola. According to the group, harmony among prominent Yoruba politicians remains essential to sustaining the political relevance and collective progress of the South-West.

COSEG concluded by urging social media users to promote constructive dialogue rather than hostility, reminding Nigerians that democracy thrives on tolerance, mutual respect, and peaceful engagement.
