Daily Catholic Reflection by Joseph Iyaji — Wednesday, 18th June 2025. Gospel: Matthew 6:1–6, 16–18.
“Your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:4, 6, 18)
In today’s Gospel, Jesus warns us against performing religious acts for the sake of human approval. Whether in giving alms, praying, or fasting, He invites us to a deeper spirituality—one that seeks the approval of God rather than the applause of men.

This passage challenges the temptation to be outwardly religious while remaining inwardly disconnected from God. True piety is not about visibility; it is about authenticity—a heart turned wholly toward the Father in humility and love. The reward of such sincerity is not worldly praise, but a deeper communion with God, who sees and blesses what is hidden.
Major Lessons from Today’s Gospel:
1. Righteousness Must Be Rooted in Relationship, Not Recognition
Jesus reminds us that our good deeds lose their eternal value when they are done to impress others. The aim of spiritual practices must be to draw closer to God, not to draw attention to ourselves.
“Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them.” (Matthew 6:1)
2. The Father Sees in Secret
This phrase appears three times in today’s Gospel. It is a powerful reminder that God values the hidden, the humble, and the sincere. Even when no one notices your sacrifice or prayer, God sees it—and He alone gives the lasting reward.
3. Prayer Is a Heart-to-Heart Encounter with God
True prayer is not a performance. Jesus teaches us to pray in the “secret room” of our hearts, away from the distractions and the desire to impress. Prayer is an intimate dialogue with the Father who listens not to our many words, but to our sincerity.
4. Fasting That Transforms
Fasting is not to display how holy we are, but to discipline the body and elevate the spirit. When we fast with a joyful face and humble heart, we remind ourselves and others that our strength comes from God alone.
5. The Quiet Power of Hidden Holiness
There is a quiet strength in those who serve God away from the spotlight. Holiness often grows in secret places—in silent acts of kindness, hidden sacrifices, and private moments of prayer.
Conclusion:
The spiritual life is not a show—it is a surrender. Jesus invites us today to purify our intentions and return to the heart of true devotion: a loving relationship with the Father who sees in secret. Let us give, pray, and fast not to be seen, but to seek God’s face more deeply.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, purify my heart and intentions. Teach me to seek You above human praise. Help me to give generously, pray sincerely, and fast joyfully—always for Your glory. May my hidden life in You bear fruit that will last forever. Amen.
