Dangote Refinery Begins Free Fuel Deliveries Using CNG Trucks: Relief for Motorists or Temporary Fix?

Independent fuel marketers in Nigeria have begun receiving petroleum products from Dangote Refinery at zero delivery cost, following the rollout of compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered trucks aimed at slashing distribution expenses and easing pump prices.

The president of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Abubakar Shettima, confirmed on Friday that marketers across Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, and other South-Western states have already started taking delivery of fuel through the refinery’s newly deployed CNG-powered fleet.

Details of the Free Delivery Initiative

According to Shettima, the deliveries began this week after the refinery launched over 1,000 CNG-powered trucks, part of a 4,000-vehicle order from China. The initial rollout had been delayed by shipping bottlenecks but is now expected to reach full capacity before October 2025 when the remaining vehicles arrive.

“Dangote has started the free delivery. Already, the trucks have begun moving and discharging products in most parts of the Western Zone. My members are very pleased with the development,” Shettima stated.

The IPMAN president emphasised that only registered marketers would benefit from the initiative, though registration remains open through an online portal designed to streamline the process.

Early Impact on Pump Prices

Shettima revealed that pump prices are already dropping in areas where Dangote Refinery has started direct delivery, with rates expected to fall from ₦865 per litre to about ₦841 as the system expands across the country.

“Wherever the refinery discharges, independent marketers reduce their pump prices accordingly,” he said, noting that some filling stations, including those operated by MRS, have already lowered prices in response.

Analysts’ Perspectives: Real Reform or Short-Term Relief?

Economic observers believe the direct delivery strategy could disrupt Nigeria’s fuel supply chain by cutting out middlemen, lowering distribution costs, and stabilising prices amid post-subsidy challenges.

However, analysts caution that while free delivery and CNG trucks could ease immediate price pressures, structural issues in Nigeria’s energy sector — including forex volatility, pipeline vandalism, and policy inconsistencies — still pose long-term risks.

Some commentators also raised questions about sustainability: How long can the refinery maintain free deliveries before operational costs demand adjustments? Will pump prices remain stable if crude oil prices or exchange rates shift significantly?

Wider Economic Implications

The scheme reflects a broader shift toward alternative energy logistics, with CNG-powered vehicles positioned as a cost-effective and environmentally friendlier option compared to diesel-powered trucks.

Allegedly, the move could influence transportation costs beyond the petroleum sector if other industries adopt similar energy-efficient logistics models, potentially shaping Nigeria’s path toward energy diversification.

A Step Forward with Questions Ahead

The free delivery initiative marks a bold step by Dangote Refinery toward easing fuel distribution bottlenecks and bringing relief to motorists grappling with high fuel costs since the 2023 subsidy removal.

Yet, as experts point out, its long-term success will depend on policy stability, market dynamics, and the refinery’s capacity to balance cost efficiency with sustainability.
