Dangote Refinery Reverses Decision, Resumes Petrol Sales in Naira After Government Intervention
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
Dangote Petroleum Refinery has reversed its earlier decision to halt the sale of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, in Naira, announcing the immediate resumption of transactions in the local currency following government intervention.

Intervention by Naira-for-Crude Transaction Committee
Akahi News gathered that the reversal came barely 24 hours after the refinery had, in a Friday memo, declared its intention to suspend Naira-denominated sales of PMS starting Sunday, 28 September 2025.
According to the management, the Chairman of the Naira-for-Crude Transaction Committee, Dr Zacch Adedeji, waded into the matter, leading to the swift restoration of the payment arrangement in Naira.
In a fresh statement issued on Saturday, the refinery announced:
“Following the intervention of the Naira-for-Crude Transaction Committee Chairman, we are pleased to inform you of the resumption of PMS sales in Naira commencing immediately. Customers may proceed to place their orders in Naira for both self-collection and free delivery to the earlier advised locations across the country.”
Customers Assured of Uninterrupted Supply
The refinery urged marketers and distributors to disregard the earlier suspension notice, assuring that sales would continue without interruption to guarantee affordability and availability of petrol across the nation.
Industry observers note that this development comes amid growing concerns about fuel supply stability, with many Nigerians relieved at the decision to maintain transactions in the local currency.
Background to the Controversy
On Friday, Dangote Refinery had cited operational reasons for the temporary suspension of Naira transactions, a decision that immediately stirred reactions from petroleum marketers and consumer advocacy groups. The swift reversal, however, appears to have calmed tensions, with the company pledging its commitment to ensuring steady supply and price stability for petrol in Nigeria.
