Shock and Panic Grip Delhi After Car Blast Near Iconic Landmark
At least eight people have been confirmed dead following a powerful car explosion near the historic Red Fort in New Delhi, India’s capital, according to city police. The incident, which occurred in a Hyundai car close to the bustling Red Fort area, sent shockwaves across the densely populated district on Monday evening.
Akahi News gathered that the cause of the blast remains under investigation, although the car’s owner has reportedly been arrested. Television footage from the scene showed flames engulfing multiple vehicles as emergency responders struggled to contain the inferno.

Authorities Launch Full-Scale Investigation
India’s Interior Minister, Amit Shah, has ordered a high-level probe into the explosion, urging detectives to explore every possible angle.
“All options will be investigated immediately, and we will present the results to the public,” Shah said, adding that security agencies had been directed to review footage from nearby CCTV cameras.
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha told journalists that “a slow-moving vehicle stopped at a red light before an explosion happened in that vehicle.” Forensic and counter-terrorism teams were swiftly deployed to comb the site for evidence.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a message of condolence, expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
“May the injured recover at the earliest. Those affected are being assisted by authorities,” Mr Modi said.
Casualties and Widespread Damage
According to multiple TV channels, at least 11 people sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals as ambulances flooded the area. Delhi’s Deputy Fire Chief confirmed that six vehicles and three autorickshaws caught fire, with firefighters working tirelessly to extinguish the flames.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos, with thick smoke filling the air and residents running for safety.
“We heard a big sound; our windows shook,” a nearby resident told NDTV, recalling the moment of the blast.
The explosion reportedly occurred around 7 p.m. local time, just as many commuters were returning home, making the area especially crowded.
Historical Context and Security Concerns
The Red Fort, known locally as the Lal Qila, is a 17th-century Mughal-era monument and one of India’s most important national landmarks. It is the site from which the Prime Minister delivers the annual Independence Day address on August 15.
Akahi News learnt that India has witnessed several tragic explosions in recent decades — some linked to militant activity, others to industrial mishaps. In April, a deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir sparked military exchanges with Pakistan. The capital itself has not seen a major explosion since the 2011 briefcase bomb near the Delhi High Court, which claimed a dozen lives.
Given the Red Fort’s symbolic significance, authorities are treating the current incident with the utmost seriousness, with security heightened across major public spaces in Delhi.

Nation Awaits Answers
As forensic experts continue their investigation, questions linger over whether the explosion was a terrorist act, an accident, or a deliberate attempt to sow panic. The Indian public, still haunted by memories of past attacks, is calling for transparency and swift action.
The results of the preliminary investigation are expected to be made public soon, as the government pledges full accountability.
