Digital Technologies Key to Fair Grading in Economics Education, Experts Say at IAFEE National Conference
By Joseph Iyaji | Akahi News
The just-concluded 8th Annual National Conference of the International Association of Economics Educators (IAFEE) at the University of Calabar, Cross River State witnessed a groundbreaking presentation on the role of digital technologies in promoting fairness and inclusivity in Economics education.

A team of Neo-Keynesian Educator thinkers led by Akpa John Ipuole presented an opinion paper titled “Objectivity in Grading Through Digital Technologies: The Role of Graduate Assistant in Economics Education for Inclusive Economic Development.” The paper sparked intellectual discussions among scholars, policymakers, and educators about the urgent need to embrace technology in academic assessment processes across Nigerian universities.
Concerns About Current Grading Practices
In their presentation, the researchers revealed how traditional grading methods in tertiary institutions often lead to inconsistencies, bias, and unfair outcomes, particularly in Economics education where assessment results shape students’ academic and professional futures.
A pilot study presented by the team indicated that Graduate Assistants — often tasked with grading large volumes of scripts — sometimes lack full subject mastery. This, according to the findings, has led to biases, delays, and inconsistencies in scoring, contributing to increasing school dropout rates, rising unemployment figures, and widening illiteracy gaps across the country.
“Assessment outcomes have long-term implications for both students and society. We cannot ignore the role of fair, objective, and timely grading in fostering inclusive economic development,” the team argued.
Digital Tools as the Way Forward
To address these challenges, the paper proposed the integration of digital technologies into grading and assessment systems. Suggested tools include:
- Optical Mark Readers (OMR): To ensure accuracy in multiple-choice assessments.
- Electronic Marking Systems: For faster and more consistent evaluation of essay scripts.
- AI Examiners: To detect anomalies, standardise grading, and minimise human bias.
- Computer-Based Assessments (CBAs): For real-time, transparent, and objective evaluation processes.
The authors emphasised that digital platforms can reduce human error, improve credibility, and align assessment systems with Nigeria’s national goals for equitable education and economic development.
Call for Policy Reforms and Capacity Building
The researchers further urged policymakers and institutions to implement:
- Capacity building for Graduate Assistants and lecturers on digital assessment tools.
- Comprehensive policy reforms to mandate the adoption of technology in grading.
- Institution-wide digitisation of examination and result-processing systems.
They stressed that these reforms would help Nigerian universities produce graduates assessed on merit rather than subjective grading practices.
Notable Contributors and Future Publication
Apart from the lead author, Akpa John Ipuole, notable contributors to the paper include Ms Odey Victoria Otanya, Mr Odey Pius Ohiero, and Ms Salome Ntengwung Johnson.
The team announced that the full paper will be published in the renowned Journal of the International Association of Economics Educators (IAFEE) to provide a reference point for future research, policymaking, and institutional reforms in Nigeria and beyond.
Broader Implications for Inclusive Economic Development
The conference presentation underscored how transparent and credible assessment systems can drive equitable access to education, human capital development, and ultimately economic growth.
By reducing biases and standardising assessments, digital technologies could help Nigeria tackle structural challenges in its education sector, laying the foundation for a more inclusive and competitive economy.
Akahi News gathered that participants at the conference welcomed the recommendations with enthusiasm, noting that technology-driven reforms in education are no longer optional but essential for progress in the 21st century.
