Driver’s Last-Minute Decision May Have Saved Anthony Joshua’s Life – Lawyer, Son

Fresh details have emerged surrounding the tragic car crash involving two-time world boxing champion Anthony Joshua, with indications that a last-minute decision by his driver may have saved the boxer’s life.

Akahi News gathered that the incident, which claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s friends, occurred during a journey from Lagos to Sagamu, Ogun State. The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 47, is currently facing charges over the crash but has pleaded not guilty.

Speaking during proceedings at the Sagamu High Court, Kayode’s lawyer, Olalekan Abiodun, disclosed that Joshua had initially been seated in the front passenger seat when the journey began.

According to the lawyer, the driver later asked Joshua to move to the back seat because his large frame was obstructing the driver’s view of the side mirror. Joshua reportedly agreed and swapped seats shortly before the accident.

Abiodun explained that the decision may have spared the boxer from serious harm when the vehicle later crashed, killing two passengers identified as Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele.

“My client has pleaded not guilty. What happened was an accident,” the lawyer said, adding that Kayode had claimed the vehicle’s brakes failed despite his efforts to stop.

Court proceedings and bail

Akahi News learnt that the court granted the driver bail in the sum of ₦5 million, while the case was adjourned until 20 January for trial.

Outside the courtroom, emotions ran high as the driver’s wife was reportedly too distraught to speak.

Son insists father is innocent

The driver’s son, Ifeoluwa Adeniyi, 19, also defended his father, describing the incident as an unfortunate accident rather than reckless driving.

He maintained that his father was not speeding and was adhering to traffic rules before the brakes allegedly failed. According to him, the driver attempted to swerve to avoid a truck parked by the roadside but was unable to prevent the collision.

“He’s been driving Anthony for three years and he’s a good driver,” the teenager said, adding that the family deeply regrets the loss of lives in the crash.

He further alleged that the parked truck played a role in the tragedy, claiming the accident might not have occurred if it had not been improperly stationed on the road.

Ongoing investigations

While investigations continue, observers note that the case raises broader questions about vehicle safety, road conditions, and the dangers posed by stationary trucks on highways.

As the trial approaches, Akahi News will continue to follow developments closely to bring readers verified and balanced updates.
