Security Alert: Ex-DSS Officers Nabbed for Defrauding Nigerians Under False Identity

The Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed the arrest of two dismissed officers, Barry Donald and Victor Onyedikachi Godwin, who allegedly used the agency’s name and identity to perpetrate fraudulent activities across Nigeria.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the secret police revealed that the two former operatives had been parading themselves as active DSS personnel after their dismissal, using the Service’s name to deceive and defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

According to Akahi News, the DSS disclosed that both individuals were apprehended following investigations into multiple reports of impersonation and financial scams.

“Recall that the Department of State Services (DSS) recently issued disclaimers on two dismissed personnel of the Service, Barry Donald and Victor Onyedikachi Godwin. These individuals were alleged to be cloaking under the Service to engage in fraudulent activities,” the statement read.

DSS Confirms Arrest and Legal Action

The agency assured Nigerians that the culprits had been taken into custody and would face prosecution in accordance with the law.

“The public is hereby notified that these culprits have been apprehended and will face prosecution in accordance with the law,” the DSS stated.

Akahi News gathered that the arrests follow a series of public warnings issued by the agency earlier this month after reports emerged that the dismissed officers were using the DSS identity to defraud citizens under false pretences.

The DSS had first issued a public disclaimer on October 9, 2025, cautioning against any dealings with Barry Donald, who was reportedly involved in “unscrupulous activities.”
A similar warning followed on October 13, when the agency flagged Victor Onyedikachi Godwin for using its name to deceive unsuspecting Nigerians.

Agency Moves to Protect the Public

In a further move to safeguard citizens, the DSS announced plans to publish the names of other previously dismissed officers, warning the public to remain vigilant and verify anyone claiming affiliation with the agency.

“The Service has further resolved to publish the names of other personnel who were dismissed in the past, to prevent citizens from falling victim to possible criminal intent of any of these individuals,” the statement added.

Security analysts told Akahi News that this proactive step reflects the DSS’s growing concern over impersonation cases, which not only undermine public confidence but also expose citizens to fraud and extortion.

Public Caution and Accountability Drive

The DSS reiterated its commitment to institutional transparency and accountability, warning that it would not tolerate any misuse of its name or credentials by dismissed officers or external actors.

The agency further urged Nigerians to always confirm the authenticity of any purported DSS operation or correspondence before engaging.

“Citizens are advised to exercise caution and avoid any dealings with persons claiming to represent the Service without proper verification,” the DSS cautioned.

The arrest of the two former DSS officers marks a significant development in the agency’s ongoing efforts to sanitise its public image and curb impersonation-related crimes.

As Akahi News gathered, the DSS remains resolute in ensuring that dismissed officers or impostors who exploit the Service’s identity to defraud innocent citizens will face full legal consequences.

Members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious activities or individuals claiming DSS affiliation to the nearest state command or through official communication channels.
