Governor Francis Nwifuru, who led the solemn farewell on Thursday at Unity Square, Abakaliki, described the killings as barbaric and heartbreaking. Speaking with deep emotion during the Holy Mass, the governor lamented that the victims were industrious sons and daughters of Ebonyi who had travelled in search of legitimate means of livelihood but were “cut down in their prime by mindless attackers.”

“I am in pain because these were innocent citizens who had no quarrel with anyone, yet their lives were brutally terminated. Ebonyi State mourns with heavy hearts today,” Governor Nwifuru said.

He also promised state support to help the families rebuild their lives, while urging Ebonyi people to remain united, vigilant, and prayerful against insecurity across the South-East and Nigeria at large.

Government Promises Financial Aid

The Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Ikeuwa Omebeh, consoled the families and commended the governor for granting a state burial, praying for divine comfort for the bereaved.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Moses Ekuma, announced that the government would provide financial support to each of the bereaved families, ranging between ₦5 million and ₦10 million, to help them start businesses and cushion the impact of their loss.

The mass burial stands as a stark reminder of the lingering insecurity in the region and the urgent need for collective action to safeguard lives.
