Edo Police Arrest Inspector, Three Civilians Over Alleged Extortion and Robbery

The Edo State Police Command has arrested one of its officers, Inspector Ojo Oloruntobi, alongside three civilians, for alleged involvement in extortion, brutality, and robbery in Benin City.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, confirming that the arrested civilians are Charles Onah, Joseph Ohis, and Enoma Agho. According to him, the suspects had been working with the police inspector to intimidate and extort residents, subjecting victims to harassment and dispossession of their belongings.

The arrests followed the circulation of a viral video in which a victim claimed he was abducted by policemen, intimidated, and robbed of his phone and other valuables. Acting on the complaint, the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, ordered an immediate investigation and the apprehension of the culprits.

Yamu revealed that on August 15, 2025, operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team intercepted the suspects in a silver Toyota Yaris with incriminating evidence. He stressed that the Commissioner strongly condemned the criminal conduct, describing it as shameful and unacceptable.

“CP Monday Agbonika has made it clear that there will be no hiding place for rogue elements within the Force, reiterating the Command’s zero tolerance for corruption, abuse of office, and unprofessional conduct. Any officer caught in such acts will be dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted in line with the laws of the land,” Yamu stated.

The Command also urged members of the public, including the victim in the viral video, to assist investigators with credible information to ensure justice is served. Yamu reaffirmed that the police remain committed to protecting lives and property, restoring public trust, and upholding the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
