Eight Shot in Deadly Attack Outside LDS Church During Memorial Service in Salt Lake City
Two people were killed and six others injured on Wednesday night after a shooting erupted outside a church meetinghouse in Salt Lake City, Utah, while a memorial service was ongoing inside, Akahi News gathered.
The incident occurred in the rear parking lot of a red-brick building belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), commonly known as the Mormon church, sending shockwaves through the quiet north-western neighbourhood.

What Happened at the Church Grounds
According to police accounts, mourners were attending a memorial service inside the church when gunfire broke out outside the premises. All eight victims were adults, with at least three of the injured reported to be in critical condition.
Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene, while the area was cordoned off as investigators began piecing together the circumstances surrounding the attack. As of Wednesday night, no suspect had been taken into custody.
Akahi News learnt that the shooting did not occur inside the church building itself but in the parking area behind the place of worship, heightening fears among congregants and residents in the vicinity.
Police Rule Out Religious Motive
Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd told journalists that authorities do not believe the attack was motivated by religious hatred or aimed at a specific faith group.
“We don’t believe this was a targeted attack against a religion or anything like that,” Redd said, adding that investigators also do not consider the shooting to be random.
While the motive remains unclear, police have indicated that early findings suggest the incident may have stemmed from a personal dispute or a situation unrelated to the religious gathering taking place inside the church.
A Close-Knit Congregation in Shock
The affected church is known to primarily serve members of the Tongan community and regularly holds worship services in the Tongan language, according to information available about the congregation.
Community leaders and residents described the area as peaceful, making the violence particularly jarring. Akahi News gathered that local faith groups and neighbours have begun offering support to victims’ families as the investigation continues.
Renewed Concerns Over Gun Violence
The Salt Lake City shooting adds to growing concerns about gun-related violence in the United States, particularly incidents occurring near or around places of worship. Observers say such attacks, regardless of motive, continue to raise questions about public safety during communal and religious gatherings.
Police have urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward, stressing that the investigation remains active and ongoing.
