FCE Osiele Music Department Undergoes Major Renovation After Years of Neglect

A Long-Awaited Transformation for Music Education
The Department of Music at the Federal College of Education (FCE), Osiele, Abeokuta, is finally witnessing a long-overdue revival after years of infrastructural decay. Akahi News gathered that the once-dilapidated building, which had stood as a shadow of its original purpose, is now undergoing a complete renovation, bringing renewed hope to students, lecturers, and the entire college community.

From Decay to Development
During a recent visit, Akahi News observed construction workers actively transforming the old structure into a modern, befitting facility. For many years, the department struggled with broken roofs, leaking ceilings, cracked walls, and outdated classrooms, making learning difficult and uninspiring. Some students admitted feeling embarrassed to invite friends from other departments to see the deteriorated learning environment.
However, the ongoing project promises a new dawn. The renovation, according to the project supervisor, involves a total overhaul, including reinforced foundations, new roofing, modern fittings, and improved interior spaces. He assured that the project would be completed on schedule and meet contemporary academic standards.
Students and Lecturers Express Joy
Speaking with Akahi News, several students described the renovation as a long-awaited intervention. Samuel, a second-year student, said, “For the first time in a long while, I feel proud to say I belong to the Music Department. The management has finally remembered us.”
Maryam, another student, recounted how rainwater often disrupted lectures in the old building. “We had almost given up hope. Now, this project means better classrooms, practice spaces, and an environment where creativity can thrive,” she said enthusiastically.
Lecturers also shared similar sentiments, noting that the poor state of the building had hindered effective teaching for years. They expressed optimism that the new facility would create a conducive learning atmosphere, enabling both staff and students to achieve academic excellence.
Symbol of Recognition and Future Growth
Beyond the physical structure, students believe the renovation represents dignity, recognition, and the prioritisation of music education within the institution. Grace, a second-year student, remarked, “This project shows that music is just as important as any other course. It is a vital part of education and culture.”
They also appealed to the college management to complement the renovation with modern equipment such as soundproof studios, digital tools, and quality musical instruments to meet global standards.
A Broader Development Agenda
Akahi News learnt that the Music Department’s facelift is part of a wider plan to rehabilitate departments that have suffered neglect over the years. The college management reportedly prioritised the music building due to its cultural importance and the urgent need to support students’ creative development.
For many on campus, the renovation is more than just bricks and mortar — it is a symbol of hope for the future of music education at FCE Osiele. As one final-year student summed it up: “This is not just about a building; it is about restoring pride, creativity, and opportunities for the next generation of musicians.”
