Federal Government Reaffirms Commitment as Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway Records Major Construction Milestones
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its determination to deliver transformative infrastructure with long-term socio-economic benefits as construction progresses steadily on the 1,068-kilometre Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, one of the flagship projects under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Akahi News gathered that the superhighway is among the four Legacy Road Projects being implemented by the current administration, aimed at strengthening national integration, boosting trade, and unlocking economic opportunities across multiple regions of the country.

National Media Tour Showcases Project Progress in Kebbi
Speaking during the National Media Tour and Commissioning of Emergency and Intervention Projects in Kebbi State on Tuesday, 21 January 2026, the Director of Information and Public Relations, Malam Mohammed A. Ahmed, explained that the tour was organised to enable stakeholders, journalists, and the public to directly assess the scale, quality, and pace of ongoing construction works.
He noted that particular attention was given to sections of the highway with strong community impact in Kebbi State, adding that the exercise also provided an opportunity to gauge public perception of the Federal Government’s delivery of road infrastructure.
Superhighway to Connect Seven States, Drive Economic Growth
The Federal Controller of Works, Engr. Ishaya Vandu, disclosed that the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway stretches from Ilelah in Sokoto State to Badagry in Lagos State, traversing Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos.
According to him, the highway is strategically designed to stimulate national integration, enhance logistics efficiency, and accelerate economic development along the corridor.
Describing the project as a “dream come true,” Engr. Vandu recalled that the road was first conceived during the administration of the late President Shehu Shagari but is now being actualised decades later under President Tinubu’s leadership.
Akahi News learnt that major construction milestones have already been recorded, reflecting the administration’s renewed emphasis on quality and durability.
Key Construction Milestones Achieved
Engr. Vandu revealed that Continuous Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) works have commenced between Kilometre 177 and Kilometre 170, covering a full-width, three-lane dual carriageway with a central median over a seven-kilometre stretch.
Earthworks have progressed up to Kilometre 135, while site clearance continues on the remaining 17 kilometres between Kebbi and Sokoto States. Soil stabilisation works using lateritic materials mixed with stone and cement have been completed across approximately 25 kilometres, with reinforcement activities currently ongoing.
He further disclosed that additional construction teams are operating from Kilometre 348, where about 10 kilometres of site clearance has been completed, expressing optimism that substantial progress would be achieved before the second quarter of the year.
Engineers, Civil Society Applaud Quality of Work
Reacting to the quality and scale of the project, the Immediate Past Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Kebbi Branch, Engr. Adamu Idris, described the superhighway as exceptional, noting that he had rarely witnessed a road project of such magnitude and standard in his professional career.
Similarly, the Chairman of the NSE, Kebbi Branch, Engr. Muhammed Nadeem Abdullahi, praised the initiative as “truly a superhighway,” commending the President’s foresight and urging contractors to sustain the current pace and quality of execution.
The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Kebbi State, led by Comrade Mansir Isah, also applauded the Federal Government, highlighting the project’s positive impact on local communities, particularly in employment generation.
Presidency Dismisses Social Media Claims
In his remarks, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North-West Zone), Hon. Abdullahi Tanko Yakasai, dismissed social media claims suggesting that the project was non-existent, stressing that visible progress on the ground clearly contradicts such narratives.
He commended President Tinubu’s determination in reviving a project conceived more than four decades ago to strengthen connectivity between Northern and Southern Nigeria, deepen economic activity, and promote national cohesion.
Hon. Yakasai further highlighted key features of the superhighway, including solar-powered street lighting to enhance safety and security, construction of dams and rail infrastructure along the corridor to support agriculture, power generation, commerce, and efficient movement of people, goods, and services.
He noted that the Kebbi axis, spanning over 250 kilometres, represents the longest section of the alignment and is already creating employment and economic opportunities for host communities.
Emergency Road Projects Commissioned in Kebbi
During the tour, three Emergency and Special Intervention road projects were also commissioned. These include repairs of flooded washout embankments and desilting of blocked drains along the Jega–Koko–Yauri and Malando (Nigeria–Niger Republic Border Route A1) corridors in Kebbi State.
Other commissioned projects addressed flood damages along the Birnin Kebbi–Argungu–Kaniyaka (Kebbi–Sokoto State Border) Road, as well as the rehabilitation of flood-affected sections on the Bunza–Kamba axis along the Kalgo–Bunza–Kamba Road.
The Federal Ministry of Works reiterated its unwavering commitment to ensuring quality, durability, and timely delivery of road infrastructure nationwide, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda’s focus on transportation as a catalyst for economic growth and national development.
